AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Lockheed Martin landed a $3.9 million contract to develop a rifle scope attachment meant to improve accuracy in the U.S. military.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency contract authorized the development of system using a low-power laser rangefinder that adjusts for wind and other environmental conditions. The system is meant to allow soldiers to accurately view targets at varying distances without changing scopes.
Scopes currently focus primarily on a single target range "impacting soldiers' effectiveness and survivability when engaging targets at different distances during a single mission," said Dan Schultz, a Lockheed Martin vice president.

That is odd to even put a scope on those weapons.Oh come on... when dumping a 30 round 5.56 magazine on full auto, it most definitely helps to have a precision scope. Preferably a 10x-30x zoom.

You dont want to put a scope any more powerful that 2x on a a straightleg infantrymans rifle. Otherwise you will keyhole his vision. My Son-in-law, a Marine in a weapons Battalion, has a 3.5 power Trijicon ACOG on his duty M-4. Also has a AN/PEQ-16A laser/IR sight.

That is odd to even put a scope on those weapons. Search for the term "ACOG" on your favorite search engine. Much of our ground troops are using them in conjunction with lasers for short range.

How is a scope local to a rifle going to compensate for wind downrange? I was taught to look at angles to determine the wind velocity downrange, how is a scope going to do that?! Maybe it has an attached weathervane, windsock and anemometer

Check out Doppler LIDAR. It's like radar but uses much smaller wavelength laser light pulses instead of radio and therefore can see the motion of individual air particles. I would love a device like this for thermal hunting when paragliding. Making no mistakes a paraglider, hang-glider or sailplane might fly hundreds of miles until sunset.

Cant the laser be seen and thus give away the troops positions? Yes, it can give away the position of the laser but the laser doesn't need to be at the same position as the troops or robot holding the gun. There can be decoy lasers to flush out or confuse a well-equipped enemy. A sniper bullet is probably not enough in this case.

You dont want to put a scope any more powerful that 2x on a a straightleg infantrymans rifle. Otherwise you will keyhole his vision. Brits tried using 4x in Norther Ireland and found it to be sub optimal. They recommended based on their use magnification between 1.5 to 2x. This allow full vision with a slight bump up to the shooter in aim point. I like the Weaver V3 (a 1x-3x variable, also recommended by JP Enterprises: http://www.jprifles.com/1.6.3.3_Weaver.php ). At 1x, you can see absolutely everything with both eyes open, and it's about as quick on the target (with the heavy reticle) as a red dot. If you need some magnification, crank it up to 3x, and you're good for two or three hundred yards (probably more, if your eyes are better than mine ;>)...

They’ll know it’s working when trying to view a politician through it causes overloads trying to calculate the wind [speed].

The only way it would make sense is if the soldier could estimate the wind speed and enter it into the computer. Since it has a distance from the laser rangefinder, and it knows the exterior ballistics, it could adjust the windage and elevation settings.
I can’t see the point of putting this on a battle rifle, especially a carbine. If I was a sniper, I’d love to have such a tool. It makes no sense to put it on a short barrelled rifle that was designed for urban combat.
