I've heard direct accounts of this several times over the years from people who live along the border in Arizona and Texas.

President Obama told Senate Republicans Tuesday that he’s read the controversial Arizona immigration law and is concerned it would allow for discrimination — but is planning to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to allay security concerns.
An administration official confirmed to Fox News that Obama plans to request $500 million for “enhanced border protection and law enforcement” and deploy the National Guard troops as needed.
The official said the National Guard would be used to “provide intelligence; surveillance and reconnaissance support; intelligence analysis; immediate support to counternarcotics enforcement; and training capacity until Customs and Border Patrol can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border.”

Link between Al Qaeda, Trafficking and Brazilians Smugglers
The Federal Police try to unravel a puzzle that blends the terrorist network Al Qaeda, cocaine trafficking to finance terror actions and a Brazilian group of suspected smugglers.
The research aims to identify who the Brazilians cited by militants linked to Al Qaeda, the terrorist group that would help to put between 500 kg and a ton of cocaine in Mali, West Africa.
The apparent connection Brazilian was discovered with the arrest in December last year, three militants from an arm of Al Qaeda that operates between Ghana, Mali and Algeria, West Africa.
The trio - Omar Issa, Harouna Touré and Abdelrahman Idris - is from Mali, Ghana was arrested and deported to New York where he will be judged.
It is the first arrest of members of Al Qaeda in a case that the U.S. government classifies as narco-terrorism - the sale of drugs to finance armed actions.
Touré was contact with Brazilians, according to an investigation by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. anti-drug).
In telephone conversations and video recordings, Toure says he would bring cocaine from Colombia with the help of Brazilians. The passport of it has to certify that they went to Brazil, France and Saudi Arabia.
Asked by Leaf, the VP says that investigates which group would perform in the trafficking route between Brazil and Mali.
