Prop 16 on June Primary Ballot

TOPICS: Activism/Chapters; Constitution/Conservatism; Politics/Elections; US: California
KEYWORDS: anystreet; california
Proposition 16 will impose a two-thirds voter approval requirement whenever a new or expanded electricity service is provided that uses public funds. I've read through this proposition a couple of times and have not been much enlightened. The fact that P,G and E has spent $10,000,000 supporting this bill makes me think that the status quo is fine with them; i.e. getting a two-thirds vote almost guarantees that new vendors and expansions will not occur. I guess you should vote yes on this issue if you think that PG&E has your best interests at heart. After analyzing the smart grid/smart meter program, I have come to the conclusion that they do not! I'll vote NO.

Why just electrical companies? What about other utilities? Electricity must be singled out?

I smell a rat.

What’s the point? Some leftist judge will just overrule the will of the people anyhow!

So you rather lay down, without a fight? That's quite defeatism and explains so much about why we are in this situation.

But have no worries, there are people out there devoted to conservative activism and do the work so many are too apathetic to do it precisely for this reason alone: someone else will do it for them.

I have to admit that this is the one initiative I’m completely on the fence about. Ordinarily, I really like the 2/3 voting requirement—for the State budget, for new taxes. And I know the Sac Bee is strongly opposing this measture—and generally I tend to vote exactly the opposite of the Bee.

But at the same time, I love the lower rates I enjoy through SMUD, and I feel sorry for my relatives that are PG&E electrical customers (they do pay a lot more than I do).

Thanks for the additional information. It should help this voter be a little more informed on this questionable and confusing initiative.

PG&E has spent more like $44 million...pure “power” grab by PG&E. Trying to prevent future competition like M.I.D. (Modesto Irrigation Dist.), and SMUD in Sacto. Voting NO!!

I was wondering what would happen in case of an earthquake?

Does this mean that PG&E doesn’t have to do anything since they are not allowed to use taxpayer funds ..??

I don’t get this prop 16 - what are they really after ..??

At the same time, my radio (not liberal) indicated that some communities have been appropriating PG & E systems as part of their take over of the service and thus protection of “property rights” is what is behind the ammendment.
The guest recommended a Yes vote.

Obviously PG&E believes they will be better off not losing this part of “their” traditional business. I used to support PG&E when they were non-political and simply prepared to provide power at regulated rates. Now with semi-degregulation I am not sure how to look at this.

Property rights shouldn’t apply to an utility that is a monopoly and acted irresponsibly. PG and E has been subsidizing coastal rate 1 users using inland high rate users with the blessing of the PUC. It is just a variant of socialism but also working one region against another. They have hid this until recently and now they have an uprising to deal with. They need to go away.
