Republicans Capture House Seat in Obama's Hometown

May 22, 2010 Republicans Capture House Seat in Obama's Hometown

Honolulu -- Republicans scored a midterm election victory Saturday when Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou won a Democratic-held House seat in Hawaii in the district where President Obama grew up -- the latest triumph for the GOP as it looks to take back control of Congress.

Djou's victory was a blow to Obama and other Democrats who could not rally around a candidate and find away to win a congressional race that should have been a cakewalk. The seat had been held by a Democrat for nearly 20 years and is located in the district where Obama was born and spent most of his childhood.

"This is a momentous day. We have sent a message to the United States Congress. We have sent a message to the national Democrats. We have sent a message to the machine," Djou said. "The congressional seat is not owned by one political party. This congressional seat is owned by the people."

Djou received 67,274 votes, or 39.5 percent. He was trailed by state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, a Democrat who received 52,445 votes, or 30.8 percent. The other leading Democrat, former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, received 47,012 votes, or 27.6 percent.

Republicans see the victory as a powerful statement about their momentum heading into November. They already sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate to replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts -- a place that was once thought to be the most hostile of territories for the GOP. Now Republicans can say they won a congressional seat in the former backyard of the president and in a state that gave Obama 72 percent of the vote two years ago.

If the dem had won it would have been right on the front page and would have been there for 3 days.

They can downplay it all they want, but come November...

The bloodbath will be obvious.

I think Djou will survive. Also the Hawaii GOP can use this to help Akiona. They present a unified front and continue the grass roots effort they can change Hawaii for a long time to come. George Bush if I remember managed to get 47% of the vote in this district without even trying so it isn’t so impossible.

I think young people are more open to DJou. Also the flap about gay marriage and civil unions didn’t and won’t help Democrats unless of course Linda Lingel doesn’t use her veto.

“and is located in the district where Obama was born and spent most of his childhood.”

Really?

Hmmmmm.

Where’s the BC?

And where’s the passports?

And where’s ALL of the other pertinent records?

Not his “hometown.” His hometown is Chicago. If his Chicago seat was in dispute THAT would be news.

Why do I get the feeling that an Obama reelection loss will be viewed by the drive-by media as not a referendum on Obama (seeing as how nothing else is)?

This is not really encouraging. The two rats combined got nearly 60%.
I think it is quite encouraging, considering 0bama got 72% in the district.
That's a 12% drop in support for the Democrats in less than 2 years.

Yeah, but the vote total for the election is down about 20%.

Nancy Pelosi and the MSM all said that the republican surge was DEAD and STOPPED after tuesday’s special election in PA-12. They all said that any momentum the GOP had was promptly stopped in PA-12 and the dems have NOTHING to fear this November.......

R-i-g-h-t. Heck, we're tea-sipping Republicans. We got No Plan. No Program.
No Leader. No Clue. Not Sure what we're doing. We're Going Nowhere.
Unlike those smart Demos who elected that man in the WH.
Now there's a group with A Plan (/snix).

This seat and New Orleans (Cao) will be among the first to go Democrat on Nov. 2.

Along with the seat Mike Castle is giving up to run for Senate in DE.

Thank God! Our first House victory since 2004 in taking back a seat held by the socialist commie demoRATs. We were 0-2 in special House elections with NY-23 and PA-12. Hopefully Djou will not turn out to be a placating RINO & traitor like Scott Brown, after his sellout & bribe in voting for the Wall Street UnReform Bill.

OK, let’s assume, arguendo, that Barack Obama was born in Honolulu within the confines of the HI-01. Joe Biden was born in Scranton, PA, which lies within the PA-11 held by Democrat Paul Kanjorski. If Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta beats Kanjorski this November (which is a strong possibility), the GOP will have gained House seats in the two districts that include the birthplace of the President and VP within two years of their election.

I was wondering whether this had ever happened before, and I think that it may have occurred within 2 years of the initial election President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H.W. Bush.

President Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, which is in Whiteside County in the NW part of the state. Wasn’t Whiteside County in the IL-17 back in 1982? The 1982 version of the IL-17 had been numbered the IL-19 prior to 1982 and held by Republican Tom Railsback. In 1982, Democrat Lane Evans picked up the seat for the Democrats, and if the IL-17 included Tampico then it resulted in President Reagan’s birthplace seeing its Representative go from Republican to Democrat.

As for George H.W. Bush, he was born in Milton, MA. Was Milton in the old MA-10 held by Republican Margaret Heckler? If so, it too switched from GOP to Democrat in the 1982 election when Barney Frank defeated Heckler. However, I think that most likely Milton was in the old MA-11 held by Brian Donnelly (which district disappeared in 1992 and Milton was moved to the MA-09).

Reagan’s birthplace of Tampico, IL (Whiteside Co.) was in the 19th in 1980 (then held by liberal RINO Tom Railsback). It was redistricted into the 16th for 1982 and that was held by the squishy RINO Lynn Martin.

As for GHW Bush’s birthplace of Milton, MA, it was not in Peggy Heckler’s old district but was in Democrat Brian Donnelly’s 11th in both 1980 and 1982.
