May 22, 2010 Republicans Capture House Seat in Obama's Hometown

Honolulu -- Republicans scored a midterm election victory Saturday when Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou won a Democratic-held House seat in Hawaii in the district where President Obama grew up -- the latest triumph for the GOP as it looks to take back control of Congress.

Djou's victory was a blow to Obama and other Democrats who could not rally around a candidate and find away to win a congressional race that should have been a cakewalk. The seat had been held by a Democrat for nearly 20 years and is located in the district where Obama was born and spent most of his childhood.

"This is a momentous day. We have sent a message to the United States Congress. We have sent a message to the national Democrats. We have sent a message to the machine," Djou said. "The congressional seat is not owned by one political party. This congressional seat is owned by the people."

Djou received 67,274 votes, or 39.5 percent. He was trailed by state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, a Democrat who received 52,445 votes, or 30.8 percent. The other leading Democrat, former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, received 47,012 votes, or 27.6 percent.

Republicans see the victory as a powerful statement about their momentum heading into November. They already sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate to replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts -- a place that was once thought to be the most hostile of territories for the GOP. Now Republicans can say they won a congressional seat in the former backyard of the president and in a state that gave Obama 72 percent of the vote two years ago.

Well, I can’t believe the Hawaiians will elect that fat, greasy pig Abercrombie as their governor...

"...This is great news. It looks like it was a rout, too..."

By the people who supposedly know Obama best.

This is not really encouraging. The two rats combined got nearly 60%. In November when it comes down to R vs D it’ll go back.

Djou received 67,274 votes, or 39.5 percent.

For once it was the democrats who had a spoiler for their own party. This should be a lesson for the repubs......

Maybe it's not just Dems vs. Republicans. Maybe it's those who are sick of D.C. vs. those who can live with the status quo. We may never know if the msm convinces Djou that the "liberal base" is how he got elected like they've apparently done with Brown.

If I only thought the GOP would be worth a damn in the majority, I would be happy.

One of us is telepathic. I couldn't agree with you more. Too often they're just the right wing of the Democrat Party.

But....but..but.....Nancy Pelosi and the MSM all said that the republican surge was DEAD and STOPPED after tuesday’s special election in PA-12. They all said that any momentum the GOP had was promptly stopped in PA-12 and the dems have NOTHING to fear this November. /s

I agree. Djou is probably toast in November, unless bitterness over the Hanabutta/Case feud lingers in the communist party. But the machine/union thug dynamic will probably keep all the commies in line to serve their plantation masters by November.

Still, it is a nice slap in the face to that filthy hippie embarrassment, Abercrombie. That alone makes Djou's victory something to celebrate.

Call me a pessimist.

This sounds good in the short-term. A Republican won, where Republicans rarely win.

However, the Democrat vote was split and the Republican did not win a majority, only a plurality. There will be another vote in November of this year with one Republican vs. one Democrat. Odds are that the Democrat will win.

Similarly, Republicans are cheering the defeat of Arlen Specter. The polls show that, for Republicans, the best outcome would have actually been a Specter win in the primary, because he polls much lower in a general election race than the democrat that beat him in the primary (Sestak).

It's nice to win the battles, but the war is more important, and we're not doing as well as we think.

“Great win, my only concern is that the Dems got over 60% of the vote but they were split.”

Kind of like the Repub/Conservative vote in NY-23.

Not sure about that, Hawaii is famous for re-electing incumbents to office, plus Djou is a very popular politician in his own right.
