'Top kill' planned to stop oil leak

Washington (CNN) -- A "top kill" method intended to stop the runaway flow of oil in the Gulf of Mexico will likely be tried early next week, BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said Friday.
In the procedure, thick, viscous fluid twice the density of water will be pumped at a high rate into the site of the leak to stop the flow so that it can then be sealed with cement, Suttles said.
"Our best estimate is probably Tuesday," he said, noting that the operation has never been tried in such deep water.
The timing for the "top kill" effort appears to be slipping: BP Managing Director Bo Dudley said Thursday night that the company would try the procedure this weekend.
Suttles offered no explanation for the discrepancy.
"We're working very, very hard with BP on the timeline for the 'top kill,' " said U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, national incident commander. "That's the ultimate near-term solution."

BP is working to assemble "a massive amount of equipment" at the site, Suttles said, including three deep-water rigs, drilling rigs, sub-sea support vessels and up to 16 robotic submarines.
"These operations are quite complex, and we won't start the job until all the equipment has been staged and all the equipment is in place," he said.
But no one expects the effort to solve all the problems associated with the spill.
"We will not rest, even if they secure the flow, even if this 'top kill' is completed successfully next week," Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said.

One methane belch taking out the other?
A friend that fished Friday said oil has made it into the area I was in the day before. But it was in small patches of thick tarry, and not the liquid sheen.
Fried some trout tonight, and no taste of oil. Was very good.
50,000 Hp is going to push on it a little...
It probably would have stopped the leak long enough so they could tap into the vein. It would have been better than leaving it uncovered
Yeah, I must be delusional. Or suicidally depressed. Just ignore me, and assume all the stats you've been fed are valid, and that this Coup will do everything it can to save the capitalist culture of the Gulf.
The box didn't contain the pressure and the oil would just continue to leak out. It was a failed attempted. It was worth trying; it has worked at lower depth but the pressure/temperature combination formed methane hydrates and would not allow the oil to flow up through their new riser.
The things Terminator could never do even in movies. Red's company is still around I think. But I don't remember any offshore stuff with Red. Just those huge blasts that sucked the oxygen out of the well on land.
*booooommm* "Done, let's go home now!"
HOG WASH...the oceans and the air are much more resilient than we can even contemplate. Oil has been leaking into the oceans for a long time, undersea volcanoes, sulfur plumes etc.
I’ll stock pile a couple tons of SPAM just in case tho!
Well, we often talk of turning sand into glass via nuke...
If we chain, say, 100 junk cars together in a tornado-shaped plug, each car loaded with tons of sand, plug the hole and nuke the cars from the inside to glass everything up, would that work?
That I had already figured out.
Or suicidally depressed.
Then seek God, not internet jockeys.
Just try and flush Obama’s ego down the well, that will plug it up for good.
A giant infundibulum with a hose attached.
lol; but is that with or without Nancy holding it?
Go surfing, fool. And send us a postcard from the beach.
You really have no idea what's going on.
None whatsoever.
Doesn't it seem there should be an underwater equivalent?
Yes, tell me all about what I don't know. I'm really interested in learning.
Strange isn't it that this is a magic well according to some of the huge flow number claimed. More oil being produced from this unprepared well. All those oil companies wasting money on other producing fields doing treatments like fracturing to get flow rates 1/10th of what some are claiming this magic well is now flowing.
The video is now real time, always available. They are pulling 5,000 BPD now from the insertion tube from the leak that was providing about 85% of the spill.
But don't worry about actual facts, keep to your delusions.
