Mojave Cross replaced, then removed

By BEN GOAD and DUG BEGLEY

The Press-Enterprise

The Mojave Cross saga took yet another unexpected turn Thursday, when the contested symbol that vanished last week reappeared briefly before being taken down by federal officials.

National Park Service officials learned Thursday morning that a cross again was on top of Sunrise Rock, about 10 miles south of Interstate 15 near Cima Road, a sparsely traveled route into the Mojave National Preserve. It's about 30 miles east of Baker.

Some version of the cross has stood there for 75 years as a tribute to fallen World War I soldiers. Vandals made off with the cross May 9, 10 days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it could remain pending the outcome of a decade-long court battle over whether it should be permitted on public land.

Once federal officials discovered Thursday that it was a replica of the stolen cross, the Justice Department said it had to be taken down.

"It just gets crazier and crazier," said Wanda Sandoz, who together with her husband, Henry, has acted as a caretaker for the cross for more than 25 years.

The employees removed the replica because a court injunction is in place that prevents any cross from being displayed at the site, Linda Slater, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service, said in a phone interview.

Nothing that 10,000 crosses planted in the ‘protected’ area can’t fix. When you plant it...it has to be steel (so they can’t just use a chainsaw, and you need a bag of concrete to make extra hard to pull up). I’m pretty sure 10,000 will be adequate to make a point.

I don't get it. The Supreme Court ruled it could stay up pending a lower court ruling, then some vandals steal it. The caretakers replace it, then the National Park Service sides with the vandals and does their work for them.

Isn't the property now slated to be privately owned by the V.F.W. in a land swap with the NPS anyway?

I don’t get it, either. What court could issue an injunction that overrode the Supreme Court?

Well, the "Jesus sign" is still on the hill along the Indian Nation Turnpike, north of Antlers a the Daisy turnoff ... :-) ...

See the Jesus sign by satellite ...

Make sure it shows on the "satellite view" when you get the page, and also, if you want, you can "back it out" to see the general area ... :-)

I've been thinking about this incident since the cross was removed a couple of weeks ago. I believe that the National Park Service snuck in there and removed the first cross so they could get their way. I'll bet if someone other than the National Park Service investigated the first theft, they would find the remains of the cross (in all likelihood cut to pieces) in the National Park Service's scrap yard. I don't trust the ba$stards.

...the Justice Department said it had to be taken down.

I wonder where Holder's goons get the authority to go against the Supreme Court ruling that the cross can remain there for now. Time for somebody to "unveil" another "commission" and start putting some of these Godless piggies in jail.

BTW: Have they found the commies who took the original cross down in violation of the SCOTUS order? I didn't think so. I imagine John Law is busy defending himself against having to arrest illegal aliens.

“A suit initiated eight years ago by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of Frank Buono, a former National Park Services employee, is attempting to have the Mojave Desert Cross removed.”

“Then in February of 2009 the case, now recognized as Salazar vs. Buono, was set to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. The cross remains covered by a cardboard box, with arguments set for October of 2009.”

“In Salazar v. Buono, the ACLU and others filed suit to remove it. Congress transferred the property on which the cross rested to private hands, and on April 28 the Supreme Court of the United States sent the case back down to the district court with orders to consider legality of the land transfer. In the meantime, the cross remained hidden by a wooden cover, making it look like a blank billboard.

“Less than two weeks later, the cross was stolen.”

“Sometime between Wednesday and Thursday, a look-alike cross was again raised. Differences between the two were soon noticed, as it had a new paint job, lacked the marks of the previous cross, and was six inches taller. LInda Slater, Mojave National Preserve spokeswoman, said that the new cross was not covered by the Supreme Court ruling.

“Technically, it’s illegal,” she said, according to the AP. “The park service has regulations about people putting up memorials. You can’t just go to a park and put a memorial to a family member.”

“The cross had been removed by the end of Thursday.”

So, from this Obamanoid “teachable moment” I’ve learned that when the Supreme Court makes a decision, it’s okay to take matters into your own hands and there is some other government agency who will back you up. IF you’re a God-hating, anti-American liberal, that is.

Just put the Cross in a big jar full of urine.

It worked at the Museum in New York, why not in the Mojave Desert?

>”and was six inches taller”<

So who climbed up there and measured it?

The Country now is nothing like the Country I grew up in.

It's a sad day, just like every day after the Kenyan In Chief swore his Oath.

You are right, they think the rules apply to everyone except them.

I find it very disturbing that nothing is being done about the cross being removed. It seems nobody cares. It’s disgusting and very un-American.

It's a sad day, just like every day after the Kenyan In Chief swore his Oath.

The Oath was:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I contend that he has at each step acted totally at odds with the Constitution, and is a Traitor to the nation.

Yep, their gall is amazing.

And they say they are making the rules up as they go.

My read of the Constitution does not provide for that kind of action.
