(A little local history in today’s paper)
Shootout at Schreiners (1873)
By Joseph Luther
The Kerrville Daily Times
Published May 21, 2010
A gang of 17 cowboys rode into downtown Kerrville on Monday, June 30, 1873. They tied up their horses at the intersection of Water Street and Mountain (now Earl Garrett) streets and strode into Schreiners to have a drink.
~snip~
Things went bad from the outset.
Forewarned of the planned robbery, Schreiner had local citizens Minute Men deployed all over the downtown area. It is said that Schreiner armed civilians with pistols and rifles from his store.
Shots rang out. One citizen was killed inside the store. The cowboys, now desperados, charged out into the street, firing their pistols as they ran. Kerrville Minute Men poured fire from shotguns, rifles and pistols into the outlaws. From rooftops, porches, windows, sidewalks and wagons, bullets ripped into the street.
