There are truly evil people around who you may have been lucky enough never to have seen in action. You've got to realize that they will act with no inhibition, no consideration of you and your loved ones.
You don't have to "want to kill anyone", you have to want to live, in one piece, and you don't want to see your loved ones hurt.
There is nothing wrong, or antisocial, about this, it is survival.
Since you are a person she will not believe, being her husband, I would recommend introducing her to women who know and understand handguns, in a group with other women interested in having and understanding handguns.
Plan it as a “girls day trip”, that you will fully fund, at a distance, including a nice lunch and a trip to a gun range, as well as ammunition and gun cleaning supplies for the “gun cleaning party” afterward.
All of these elements are very important. The only ground rule is that there be no alcohol consumed until after all the guns are cleaned and put away. Strictly soft drinks until then.
Lunch is important as a social icebreaker, along with discussion of what guns and why and how. Then off to the range, where they can try a selection of guns, and get used to the feel and noise, as well as proper safety.
The gun cleaning party is essential, so that they learn to assemble, disassemble and clean, since it is the easiest thing to put off gun cleaning until later.
And if they want to form a small gun club, that would be a superb outcome.
A baseball bat might do a better job if she only wants a gun to pistol whip someone, seriously you don’t put a gun in the hand of someone not ready to use it to save their life.
Rug rats should be taught that touching someone’s firearm, except with explicit permission or in an emergency, gets their asses whooped big time, as in having to eat dinner from the mantel. This before it is possible for them to accidentally encounter such an item. (It’s really bad form for kids to be allowed to rat through someone else’s belongings too, not the least because they could encounter other Bad Stuff, but that’s another discussion.)
If she is not willing to use the firearm properly or for its intended purpose in a life or death situation, then do NOT get her one.
If a pistol/revolver is ever brandished during a serious situation and she does not pull the trigger if it is her last resort than what is the point.
Mace or a taser would be a better option.
As for your trapping a beaver analogy that is just ridiculous.
If a person buys a gun for self defense no matter what the caliber, they should be aware that the firearm is perfectly capable of killing someone, there are no "wounding" guns on the market. Even .22s will kill and quite quickly if one knows how to aim, regardless of what some on these threads think about small calibers.
Get her a large dog.
Leave it unloaded, and she can use it like a hammer...won't kill, but will hurt!
And you can borrow it when she isn't putting up pictures with it!
I shot a gang banger in front of my house attempting to kill my friends and myself. I did NOT want to kill anyone either. It took weeks to get over the idea I might have killed him even know I was left with no choice. Trust me it is a disturbing feeling.
I did shoot to kill but it was hard to see the sights in the dark I hit him three times one round sliced his neck. The attacker lived.
(1) She ABSOLUTELY should not get one. Someone with a handgun, esp a female (most likely physically weaker than a violent thug), who isn’t willing to use it properly - to kill - will have it used on them there is a violent encounter.
And the thug will be willing to use it to kill, possibly after using it to do other violence.
(2) One more word: “Taser.”
Well, they’ve already been taught that; not to touch a firearm unless Daddy says so (as he takes them to the shooting range occasionally). As to the other, I’ve always allowed them to get into MY purse as it’s always been somewhat of a family grab bag stemming from the diaper bag days. My husband won’t go in there, though. I think he’s scared of tampons or something. hee hee
Simply stunning. If someone breaks into my house and is a threat to me, I want them dead right now before they can do anything. This isn’t like finding a mouse indoors.
She didn't say she wouldn't kill someone if she had to. She said she doesn't want to kill someone. BIG difference.
Applause for her wanting to defend herself, but...
They are for Life or Death situations.
Permanently maiming means the attacker wins the litigation lottery, and gets your house.
Hahaha...Shoulda used SnakeShot....haha.
I guess that gives you a conundrum about where to put the pistol. That rules out the purse, at least until the children are old enough to understand not to treat it as grab bag any more. (Maybe a different grab bag could be substituted so there is still a place to put fun treats from time to time. While your purse will henceforth only contain boring things like tampons, credit cards, and lipstick.)
Have her Google “Brittany Zimmerman” and read the article.
“I shot a gang banger in front of my house attempting to kill my friends and myself. I did NOT want to kill anyone either. It took weeks to get over the idea I might have killed him even know I was left with no choice. Trust me it is a disturbing feeling.”
I had an incident a few years ago that involved an intruder and it really sobered me up. I tend to go for big calibers as I did then. That was a good decision.
My step daughter is the same way. I have asked her would she protect us and then she said yes. Then I told her you might have to kill someone. Then I took her to a range and put a gun in her hand. I have her shoot as much as possible.
“I know nothing about firearms. But what is the empirical basis for your claim? I thought law enforcement officers, in particular, were trained to shoot to disable, rather than kill, their targets.”
Not to be snarky, but your first sentence is correct. The rest is completely wrong. Police are trained only to pull their firearms when deadly force may be needed, and then only to shoot when deadly force is actually necessary.
And they are taught to shoot to kill, not disable.
There are a few very rare exceptions, for example a Columbus, Ohio PD sniper shooting a gun out of a mentally disturbed man’s hand. That happened several years ago. Those are VERY rare.
