I was having breakfast on the terrace with my wife the other day and out of the blue she says to me "I think I want a handgun but I don't want it to be able to kill someone"
My first thought was "What's the point?"
Well alot of back and forth discussion, so any suggestions/comments/advice?
Perhaps she just wants to permanently maim ?

Get her to watch “Death Wish” or just settle for a Taser because she is not ready.
Ummm, does she intend to learn how to use it? Or is it just a trinket to show the girls at book-club?
Not to kill? Get her a .22!

If she does not know the purpose of a firearm, then do not supply her with one. What does she want to do, use it as a negotiating prop?
Teach her Rule #2 of Firearms: Never point a weapon at anything you do not want to destroy.
She needs to know that shooting to hurt just doesn’t work.
Take her to the range — a real life demo may help.

Wrong. Your first thought should have been; “What did I do that was so wrong? She’s gonna kill me.”
I felt like your wife, but my husband bought one for the home and I have to say I feel much safer.....I don’t want to kill anyone either, but if it’s me or him.....guess who it will be............

If she hasn’t settled in her mind that she’s ready to use the firearm to kill, if needed to defend herself, she shouldn’t get one. IMO.
It’s a basic question everybody has to reckon in their own minds. But if she hesitated because she hadn’t settled this, then the firearm could be used against her.
Either she values her life enough to be willing to kill to protect it, or she doesn't.
Short of an effective firearm and the will and skill to use it, there is nothing but vulnerability for her...
Please don't indulge her illusions of safety afforded by "non-lethal" "weapons". She should remain fearful...it might save her life.
If you pull a gun on someone you better be prepared to use it without hesitation.
I would like a handgun and I would want to stop the assailant...dead.
Your wife needs to avoid THE JUDGE, a pistol that shoots SHOTGUN SHELLS.
