Chuck Devore's Conservative Record (Military Action Claims Disputed)
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 21, 2010 | Phil Willon

Posted on 05/20/2010 6:40:31 PM PDT by red flanker

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chuck DeVore made sure that the June 8 ballot described him as "Assemblyman/Military Reservist" because, the Irvine lawmaker said, he didn't want to be mistaken for just another politician.

Throughout the campaign, DeVore has emphasized his service as a military officer and a young Reagan White House appointee at the Pentagon as experiences that helped make him the most qualified candidate. But at times he appears to have overstated those accomplishments, particularly his experience under fire and his role in the development of a U.S.-Israeli anti-ballistic-missile defense program. He also has faced criticism for acting on behalf of a group with ties to political contributors. ...

He spoke during the debate of being "shot at in Lebanon" but did not make clear that the shooting occurred in the 1980s while DeVore was a college student studying Arabic and other subjects in the Middle East. Nor did he note that while the shooting was in his vicinity, there was no indication he was a target or was in actual danger.

Here is a recent interview with Duncan Hunter where he acknowledged Chuck’s work on the SDI program and spoke very positive of him.

It may be time to make a list of the politicians that have claimed to have been shot at during a debate...

Shot At List
------------
Joe Biden
Hillary Clinton
Chuck Devore

In addition, perhaps a complete transcript of the debate would be valuable.

"The Syrians shot at us and kind of drove us off the hill, because they didn't want press over there. It was like warning shots," said DeVore, adding that he and the Israeli soldiers immediately took cover.

DeVore mentioned that former ABC News correspondent Bob Zelnick was among the journalists on the tour. Zelnick said the group climbed an observation tower in Israeli-occupied Lebanese territory, from which the Bekaa Valley could be seen. He recalls the Israeli troops taunting the Syrians, who fired shots in response. But Zelnick said they were out of range and that Israeli journalists present had publicly teased him for reacting to the gunshots. "Nothing I saw or experienced could reasonably be interpreted as our having been driven off the hill by Syrian fire," he said.

Frank Dowse, a Fiorina supporter and a retired 20-year Marine veteran from San Diego who served as a top advisor to NATO, said any attempt by DeVore — subtle or not — to imply that the Lebanon incident was related to his military service "is a bad move."

Chuck was shot at as were the reporters. He has never suggested he was shot at as a military active duty in lebannon.

Who? Me? I don’t know anything about any of those candidates, nor do I care to know. This is California’s problem. If I lived out there, I’d move.

What part or parts of the LA Times article are not true? Has anyone refuted the reporting? Do you approve of politicians lying about their military service?

I personally think that military service is largely irrelevant to a political career. Ronald Reagan did pretty well for a Reserve Cavalry officer who made training films during WWII. Jimmy Carter was an Academy grad and the worst President of my lifetime (at least until his Barakness came along). But, when they lie about their service, they lose my respect and my vote. If they will lie about their personal lives and their qualifications to serve, they will lie about anything that advances their personal agenda. I do not care to have such people in political office. I’m a little funny that way.

Not YOU. You know me better than that. I was talking about Palin’s “good instincts” you mentioned. And no matter how I slice it, despite whatever other good endorsements she has made, endorsing RINO and flip flopper Fiorina was a BAD move.

It was the perspective of a young college kid. What is your stake in this? He was probably scared and I don’t see anything they suggests he tried to inflate this into anything heroic though many may see it as an act of strength to willingly choose to go into such an area near Syria and get shot at. This is pretty shameful bit of reporting.

These people sicken me - from Kerry to Murtha to what's his name, the one in the wheelchair - and now Blumenthal and DeVore - all claiming to be some kind of military heroes - even the ones that WERE in the war zone, like Kerry - his story is disgusting...Knowing that 3 times wounded, you could demand to get out...so he saw to it he had 3 ‘wounds’ and had to DEMAND a band aid for one scratch.

It's so demeaning to our REAL troops.

None of these lily livers would last 5 minutes with my grandson's platoon - heck, they wouldn't even last long enough to make the initial trek up the mountain to the firebase.

The upcoming movie “Restrepo” should be required showing in both the Congress and the Senate and full attendance mandatory.

These men were ‘out there’ on a 15 month deployment, no running water let alone hot water, no hot food - often one MRE a day, no showers or change of clothes for 5 weeks at a time - and they were in over 1,000 (NOT typo) firefights. (and as I write this, they are back in Afghanistan - with the new ROE written to protect the Taliban over our soldiers. Bad enough they were restricted from shooting until shot at - now they're supposed to refrain from even that! Think I'm kidding. GOOGLE it.

These politicians disgust me -

Watch for it...if you miss it at the theater, it will be on Nat’l Geo in the fall. GOGGLE for reviews...

written and produced by Sebastian Junger (Perfect Storm) and prize winning photojournalist, Tim Hetherington, who both spent 5 months embedded with them in “The Most Dangerous Place on Earth” - took top award at Sundance “Grand Jury Award”

and Sebastian's book about it just came out: “WAR”

these politicians - I spit in their faces
