TAMPA An off-duty FBI agent shot and killed an Army veteran Wednesday night after a confrontation and chase at MacDill Air Force Base, officials said.
It all started at the base's family camp, a recreational vehicle area at the south end of the base, said Col. Larry Martin, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. The veteran was visiting the base when an altercation broke out. He took off on a motorcycle with security officials in pursuit, according to Martin.
"He became more and more aggressive as the pursuit continued," said Dave Couvertier, a special agent with the FBI.
When the motorcyclist arrived at the gate on S Dale Mabry Highway, he got to his feet and confronted an FBI agent, who was at the base on unrelated business, with a knife, Couvertier said.
The agent opened fire and shot the veteran at least one time, he said.
Rescue workers were summoned to help the shooting victim just outside the MacDill gate at 6:47 p.m. The victim died at the scene, according to Tampa Fire-Rescue.
No one else was injured, and the victim's name was not immediately disclosed.
"Our security forces personnel acted promptly to safeguard the base and its personnel," Martin said.

Thanks for the update.
Strange. I’m sure we’ll never hear why he started fleeing to begin with.
“No one else was injured, and the victim’s name was not immediately disclosed.”
People write funny... Why not just say it was not disclosed? Was it disclosed later? What’s his name?
“Our security forces personnel acted promptly to safeguard the base and its personnel,” Martin said.”
I suppose they stopped something from happening at the rec. park. But it was some guy on unrelated business. Glad he was armed.
I wonder if someone’s wife or husband was cheating? Or if money was involved in some way?
That’s usually the way with these kinds of things. The FBI agent was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“he got to his feet and confronted an FBI agent, who was at the base on unrelated business, with a knife,”
Yup. I would have shot him.

“...an FBI agent, who was at the base on unrelated business...”
Another strange way of writing which leaves more questions unanswered than answered. What was his unrelated business? What was his business related to then? Was it just a coincidence that there was an FBI agent with a weapon at the front gate? Why would an FBI agent start firing at a motorcyclist?
Something about being confronted by a man with knife, perhaps.
“Something about being confronted by a man with knife, perhaps.”
You’re right of course, I was trying to make a lame point about the reporter’s choice of words in the story.
“Yup. I would have shot him.”
I wouldn’t have... If I had a revolver I wouldn’t feel that threatened by someone with a knife. It’s hard to believe he thought his life was in danger. I wouldn’t be looking for an opportunity to kill somebody...
“Thats usually the way with these kinds of things. “
Apparently he was trying to get OFF the base, so it’s not like he was a threat to security...
“Come at me with a knife in a threatening manor, ie trying to stab me. and I will shoot you in the head.”
Your an Idiot. The man is not going to do that if you have a gun. And that’s not the way it was reported...
My guess is that you haven’t seen the gruesome pictures of someone who has been on the receiving end of a knife blade. It’s terrible what a knife can do to your body. I’m not talking about sticking them, I’m talking about carving them up like a turkey. A knife is just as deadly as a pistol.
Now don’t get me wrong. If he had a rag wrapped around his head, I would have shot him on sight.
Oh, you would be surprised what naive stupid people will do. Yourself for example.
“A knife is just as deadly as a pistol.”
Nope... you have to get close enough to use a knife. Unless the person is absolutely crazed, he’s going to back off if you have a gun. Going up against somebody with a knife, there’s time for multiple warnings. That’s not the way it was reported... For instance... Just because someone has a gun does not give Leo’s the right to kill them. Same with a knife...
