L.A. Mayor Dismisses Warning That Arizona Could Cut Off Power Over Boycott

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday defiantly rejected a warning by a top Arizona utilities official that the state could cut off power to Los Angeles should the city proceed with its boycott of all things Arizona.

Spokesman David Beltran told Fox News that the message didn't even warrant a response.

"We're not going to respond to threats from a state which has isolated itself from the America that values freedom, liberty and basic human rights," Beltran said.

That was after Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote a letter to Villaraigosa slamming his City Council's decision to boycott the Grand Canyon State -- in protest of its immigration law -- by suspending official travel there and ending future contracts with state businesses.

Noting that a quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants, Pierce threatened to pull the plug if the City Council does not reconsider.

"Doggone it -- if you're going to boycott this candy store ... then don't come in for any of it," Pierce told FoxNews.com.

The power cutoff was an idle threat, though well-intentioned. You can't intentionally cut off the power to city unless you want to assume responsibility for any injuries or deaths resulting from traffic accidents, shut down of medical and safety equipment, etc.

But you can start jacking up the price as the contracts expire.

I think they can’t because of a contract to supply power.

Oh please....cut the power and litigate it in court...4 years latter there may be a settlement for breach of contract. But it will take 4 minuets for LA to apologies, capitulate, drop the boycott and beg for the power to be restored.

Pull the plug OR raise the rates until legal Californians get tired of being jerked around by LaRaza and the Progressives. I’ve lived through a bunch of hurricane-induced blackouts, and, after a few days, it’s not fun anymore. Just think: LA without lights, air-conditioning, traffic signals, etc. Go for it, Arizona!

They should “accidentally” cut the juice off for a few minutes just for a chuckle. Then again, LA might be in cinders after a short riot.... Do it anyways!

Villar is bluffing.

He and his Cholo buddies know that the Evil Gringos in AZ have them by Los Cojones.

Now they gotta act cool and macho, pretend not to care.

Truth is, things could be set in motion to stop selling power to LA. The Salt River Project is a public-private entity and the legislature can direct things to be done there.

Also, APS can be directed by the Corporation Commission to do things in the interest of Arizona...like tell the LA Cartelistas to pound sand.

Arizona needs the power. It's going to grow again as Americans move there for safety and a resumption of the American way of life...not the Mexican Communist version in California.

Hope they do it. The gangbanger punks in L.A. deserve it.

Um, isn't that a response?

I would love to see the boycott going both ways, including not selling electricity to a city that ignores the law and abets illegal aliens.
And that comes from someone who would be living on battery power if it happened.
(Generator not purchased yet - but selection is under way)
(Of course, I also want out of here - in case anyone knows of a couple of acres with house and shop that would sell for the shrunken value of my house...and is close enough to stores so I don't have to go alone)

Preceeded, of course, by an extensive advertising campaign showing how much better life is in LA for an illegal immigrant!

Emailed the AZ governor to cut the power to LA. That will give the liberals a taste of all the problems illegals bring when they can’t watch tv or find under the table employment with actual American’s stolen social security numbers.

Just a tagline: APS and SRP together own 47% of the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant. The LA DWP owns about 16%, I believe.

Just a little bit of pushing and shoving to get rid of DWP...then turn out the lights on Olvera Street.

One-way bus tickets to LA, plus a guide on how to get welfare, free housing, free legal aid, etc.

Just don't let the Greyhound (Or "Crucera" - the mexican version that runs out of here) make a pee stop at the halfway point in neighboring Indio.......we have enough here, and our local hospitals are overburdened delivering anchor babies by the dozen on a daily basis.

MSNBC poll 86% agree the power should be cut: http://world-news.polls.newsvine.com/_question/2010/05/19/4309119-should-arizona-have-the-right-to-pull-the-plug-on-la-if-the-city-goes-through-its-boycott?GT1=43001

Arizona might not be able to pull the plug, but they can raise the price like crazy!

Arizona could implement an immediate 10 Cent per KW surcharge/usage on electrical generation for out of state transmission to support illegal immigrant services. Let LA argue with that...

The Mexicans plan to bully and boycott their way to living in this country illegally. AND they don't want us to fight back?

It's time we started playing hard ball with them.

No guts, no glory. Lights out.

If the Mayor is boycotting, then he should be cutting the power off to himself, not Arizona. No harm in Arizona assisting though.

Take it easy on the LA Mayor, he is little better than a wetvack himself. What else do you expect from him, especially when he is surrounded by Mexicans in LA.

Let LA get a taste of living i the dark. Wait until this summer when the Air Conditioners are drawing juice for all they are worth and shut them down.

NO -— don’t pull the plug. Far better to keep supplying them power and continually remind the world that LA is buying Arizona power and are NOT boycotting Arizona. Better for LA to be on the defensive rather than AZ. Plus Obama would just nationalize the AZ power company over what turns out to be really silly squabble.
