Gun at soccer game sparks concern(MI)

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A man in Fruitport Township has turned himself in to police after an argument following a kids' soccer game went too far.

Fruitport Township police say James Sherrill has turned himself in after pulling a gun on a player's parent. One of the coaches says Sherrill was provoked, but some parents say that even if that's true, he went too far.

Parents are not happy about what happened in the park over the weekend. Police say a gun was pulled and pointed, all because of what happened on a soccer field.

It's supposed to be a fun place to go, with kids as young as eight just having a good time playing soccer on the field, but unfortunately some parents are now admitting they may have ruined it all for the kids.

“I'd tell him you're nuts man, you don't belong here,” said Donna Staszczyk.

Staszczyk, a grandparent, is downright angry about what happened in Pine Park on Saturday. Staszczyk comes to all the games, and says across the board, coaches and parents need to calm down.

“I am hoping it's not going to scare the kids too bad,” said Staszczyk, “other than the ones who were there to see it, I am sure they are scared to death.”

On Saturday at the park, an apparent verbal confrontation between a soccer coach and a parent started in the middle of a game. Newschannel 3 has been told that James Sherrill got in the middle of the disagreement and said some frank words to try to calm the situation.

The argument later carried off the field to the parking lot where words are said to have been exchanged.

The question is: was he in fear of his life? Many people have been killed with one punch to the head. If he was confronted by a stronger, aggressive, younger man, he could have been justified.

Nice comments. There really isn’t enough information here to make a call.

In general, people have really gotten mean at the sporting events of their children.

It’s not good for the players, the coaches, the officials or the family members who show up.

Good natured support for the kids should be the goal. And it should be realized, that adult officials and coaches are going to make mistakes. That’s just one more aspect of the human element associated with every game.

Life isn’t fair. A good attitude covers a lot of ills.

Sherrill does have a concealed weapons permit..... so police say it's perfectly legal to carry a gun there

Enough said.

According to the video, this happened in the parking lot—not at the soccer field. I think that makes a bit of a difference.

There is insufficient information to make a judgement call here, IMHO

Agreed about the behavior at kids sporting events these days. The adults used to go to games to cheer on their own kids and even offer encouragement to kids from the opposing team. These days I see parents taunting kids from the opposing teams, harrassing coaches and being general morons.

I went to a Dodger game about twenty years ago. We arrived early and were looking forward to the game. To my wife’s and my consternation, there was a fan there leaning over the wall to shout every epithet in the book at Joe Morgan. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the person started in on his wife too.

Every once in a while you hear about some sports figure going off on a fan. Ever since I witnessed that guy leaning over the wall, I understood how it can happen.

I felt bad for Morgan. He didn’t deserve that. It was embarrassing for me as an LA fan to see him treated that way.

Idiots have been around since IQs mattered. Today it seems as if people think they have a license to be crude. And if they paid $0.25 cents to get in, they think they’re entitled.

It used to be better at the kids games. Now it’s out of hand there too. I agree. And you just wonder where this is headed if middle-class (in many instances) people are going to go down this road.

Personally, I think the violence in movies gives people license to act crude. I know that’s an overworked charge, but what else do you blame it on.

I’m not convinced there isn’t a rhyme or reason behind it either. It’s almost by design.

A lack of [personal] dignity & a lack of honor.
Things, it seems, are unvalued by society.

good points D.O.

is it me or does the soccer culture seem to be more 'confrontational' than other sports ???

youth baseball we had several near 'bench clearers' over the yrs, but the off field stuff was tame...

Yes, I agree. What do we expect when moral relativism is taught in our schools. If you feel good about ‘you’, it doesn’t matter what you do. Remember, “You are a good person.” Now repeat after me. “I am a good person.”

No, no, don’t look over there. We don’t want to dwell on that guy you stabbed at 17 years 364 days of your life. You can have that expunged in 3 years and a day.

Now repeat after me. “I am a good person.” There, are you okay? Gooooood. I’ve done my job. Sigh...

It’s not you. How many of our baseball parks have had to be cleared due to a brawl? How many have died due to a knife or gun attack? How many have died by a massive stampede in them?

Gilbo, my wife and I were discussing this last night. My premise went something like this. Bear with me...

“Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” have been on the tube about ten years. During that time a resurgence of interest in dance has soared in this nation. Dance movies have resulted. Schools are offering courses in dance. Kids see a real future in dance.

If this is true, and I believe it to be, why are we so reticent to believe the violence in movies is also seen as the way we should act? Our youth, especially the young men, are vying to be recognized as cool, a leader or some such. And so, a segment of them adopt behaviors they have seen their favorite actor play out on the big screen or television.

Instead of backing down or participating in a fight like we used to, people today are willing to escalate the process. Bring a knife or a gun to the festivities. And seeing gangs glorified on the tube too, why not band together so you have your own squad?

I believe our entertainment industry isn’t doing this for money alone (at the box office). I believe it’s a concerted effort by the left to cause chaos. If they can cause enough problems, their political leaders can swoop in to offer up solutions. And those solutions will wind up granting those politicians (and political parties) more power.

The middle class looses rights, but know that they will be safer for doing so.

Perhaps others can word this better than I can, but we don’t see the left gaming the system in politics they way they are, and then deny that they would stoop to this sort of thing. At least that’s my take on it.

Why do we allow people from terrorist nations to roam freely inside our nation? Whey do we let them travel back and forth to Pakistan without checking them out?

It’s the same damned thing. You increase the potential of terrorism, and there-by increase your ability to profile citizens, create airport “Iron Curtain level” security zones, and a great sounding reason to place cameras in every nook and cranny of the nation.

Then you install recognition software, remove cash from our society, demand citizens carry an ID with them at all times, and allow citizens from other nations to avoid all this, if they just walk across our border.

This is all according to plan IMO.

This nation is being taken down internally, and the trusting public is in such denial, that they can’t grasp that this could possibly be something a group of people wanted.

Bear with me...

I'll take it one step further...

while i dont think that media in itself can *cause* certain behavior, it certainly does influence and desensitize people with no moral compass...that said, the current cloward-piven on roids political atmosphere is at best pure and simple greed...

having been at the polar opposite of Truth in my life, I really believe that the decomposition of our culture is the 'rotting' stage, its been dead for some time... driven by the same demons, devils, dark spirits or whatever name you prefer, that rode with me for years, tryin to kill me, [no, i didnt see him, or hear him, but the path to self destruction was evident] I believe theyre workin overtime to fulfill their mission everywhere and the american 'idols' are everywhere...

now then what does a nation do ??? I liked ann coulters foreign policy suggestions, ya know kill all their leaders and convert em...but that aint the path to the Lord Jesus and FReedom for the world, or our country, for that matter, it must come from within, by seeing and hearing the Word...

unfortunately, I think we hafta wait and read the text, figuring out what job we have to fill and be prepared to get-r-done as the story unfolds, the here and now part...

the politics side is almost a lost cause IMO...its too compromised across the globe with too much power in a relatively few hands, all of which would love to be able to split the pot...but in reality their greed will ultimately keep em still hungry for more, so humanity will continue to suffer...

sorry guys, i cant unscramble the ramble tonight, its deep and we're screwed in the short term, but the book has a pretty good ending if ya follow directions...

Blessings guys...

Matt 24:12,13
12 — Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
13 — but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Lately I’ve been feeling like I’m part of the group in verse 12; you know, feeling a bit disheartened at the rampant injustice and corruption that abounds. {And let’s not get into introspection, where I can condemn myself pretty dang good.}

great verses, and I as well have been feelin like Im *missing* something obvious that I should understand by now...

however I think that the separate parts of the Body are designed that way, they all work towards the same goal, but dont necessarily *understand* the task given to the others...

ultimately the willingness to trust the Lord and to do what the Spirit calls us to do is what will matter...ie 'standing firm' in Lord Jesus and His Glory...
