Americans' Outlook for U.S. Morality Remains Bleak (3/4 say morals getting worse)
Gallup ^ | 5/17/2010 | Jeffrey M. Jones

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans are three times more likely to describe the current state of moral values in the United States as "poor" than as "excellent" or "good." Americans' assessment of U.S. morality has never been positive, but the current ratings rank among the worst Gallup has measured over the past nine years.

Additionally, Gallup's annual poll on moral values, conducted May 3-6, finds 76% of Americans saying moral values in the United States are getting worse; while 14% say they are getting better. Last year saw a slight improvement in these attitudes -- with 21% saying values were getting better -- but opinion has since reverted to near 2006-2008 levels.

To better understand what Americans mean when they say "moral values in the country" are getting worse, Gallup asks respondents who hold this view to describe some of the ways in which they see values deteriorating.

Most commonly, respondents see a lack of respect for other people and a more general decline in moral values and standards. But the responses are quite varied. Specifically, some blame the perceived decline on poor parenting -- specifically, parents not instilling proper values in their children. Some cite the poor examples of U.S. leaders in government and business who find themselves embroiled in ethical or moral scandals. And some reference larger societal factors, such as rising crime and violence, Americans turning away from God, church and religion, and the breakdown of the typical two-parent family.

It only took 7 posts to get to the example of why we’ll never get out of this downward spiral. If you believe we’re simply in a cycle, you’ll miss all the road signs.

Your comment reminded me of an old hymn we used to sing at church when I was a girl.

A popular revival song, “There’s An All Seeing Eye Watching You”, by J.M. Hensen dating from the early 20th century...some of the hymn’s lyrics:

All along the road to the soul’s true abode,

There’s an Eye watching you;

Every step that you take this great eye is awake,

There’s an Eye watching you.

Watching you. Watching you,

Ev’ry day mind the course you pursue;

Watching you, Watching you,

There’s an all-seeing Eye watching you.

There is passive misbehaviour and active misbehaviour...and probably not enough prayer even from the “good” folks for these misguided souls!

Our team is a Christian based team. We pray before all of our games.

Good for you, but were you then describing the behaviours of the other Christian parents from the other Christian based teams....lying and cheating and so forth...or is your Christian based team playing in a secular based league and you are describing the actions of non Christian parents?

We are an independent team. We do not play in a league, we play tournaments all over the state. Some teams are Christian based, others not.

We have been commended by league officials and opponents for our approach to the game and the behavior of our kids and coaches.

You sound like a great bunch of people; it is unfortunate as you describe how even kids leagues bring out the worst behaviour in some adults.

Thank you! We played in a tournament this weekend against a local rival team. They were playing with an illegal player. We brought it to the attention of the Director. We play by the rules and because of that we are having to travel farther until we get a player’s status sorted out.

Anyway, it was a great game, our little team came back from a 5-0 deficit and we won 5-6. When the trophies were presented, I immediately noticed that the opposing team would not shake our teams hand. Our boys don’t need to be told to shake hands, they do it because we stress sportsmanship! Pretty low class if you ask me.

The whole point of being progressive is to throw away the concept of morals. Being totally immoral is to be the best you can be.
