Sarah Palin's Political Bandwagon Is wobbling Under The Weight of Contradictions The Sarah Palin phenomenon is finally beginning to fade as contradictions mount up, says Alex Spillius in Washington
Alex Spillius 15 May 2010
We are seeing the first signs of wobble on the Sarah Palin bandwagon. This may seem a strange thing to say about a political superstar who has earned at least $12 million in the past 18 months from a publishing advance, personal appearance fees and a television punditry contract, not to forget a reality show about life in Alaska.
Palin is such a boon to the struggling book world that her second opus, America by Heart - Reflection on Family, Faith and Flag, can already be ordered in advance even though publication is six months away. A return to the number one spot on the best seller list surely awaits.
But other indices are proving less kind to the former Alaska governor. According to a recent poll more Alaskans than not think the presidency should not form the next chapter of Palin's extraordinary story, while 45 per cent gave her a negative personal rating. When John McCain plucked her from obscurity to be his Republican running mate in the 2008 campaign, her approval rating at home was 80 per cent, the highest of any governor in the country.
Now even a poll of Tea Party supporters, her most ardent fans, showed that a majority wouldn't vote for her if she ran for president in 2012. It is not just that the faithful are beginning to question her readiness for the White House.

Sarah has run into the political fight like nobody else.
How can you not see that??
I would rather have Boxer than carly or Campbell..and I can’t really believe I am typing that . But at least Boxer rescinded an award to a CAIR official.
‘using sophomoric names like McIdiot reflects poorly on you.’
Just a point of clarification - isn’t McCain’s flip flopping, Amnesty (RAT) supporting, campaign finance crusade against his own party (unilateral disarmament and unConstitutionality) worthy of such a title? It’s John McCain’s actions and legislative priorities that open him up to such mockeries, isn’t it? What do *you* think?
“IMHO, Steele is not the one. There is no the one.”
I agree with that. Palin’s point with regard to Steele seemed to me to be that he was not hostile to the tea party and was reaching out to them, which is the first step in transforming the GOP INTO the Tea Party. It had the earmarks of a Tea Party when Reagan was in power but became an ossified country club structure once the Bushies took it over. Palin wants to bring it back to its Reaganite roots.
Steele was not perfect but he was not part of the Establishment, and the GOP Establishment loathed him. The old adage, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” may have some applicability here.
In the long term, Steele should be replaced. But for the short term, he is better than someone whom Mittens or Jeb Bush would install.
Spillius has a long and embarrassing history of predicting the end of Palin. He obviously doesn’t mind being a Deomcrat or Republican press court fool.
DeVore has no money to compete.
If Steele is sacked, Romney’s people are waiting in the wings. Count on it.
I just found out that SoCalPol was zotted from FR over this CA election and her support of Sarah Palin endorsing Carly Fiorina.
How can we let the anti Palin drolls (and I do mean drolls) divide us so much that we really are eating our own! What is wrong with this site these days? Can no one see what is happening and how the libs and ron Paul types are giving us enough rope so that we silence our own conservatives?
I don’t want to hear from all the Palin haters how FR doesn’t allow any criticism of Palin. HA! Looks to be the other way around. What a disgrace.
The Gov. Brewer/Palin news conference today reinforced what SoCalpol has been saying all along!

Last I heard, SoCalPol is only suspended for a short time.
It’s always open season on Sarah Palin and that needs to stop.
Sarah is the only conservative voice that resonates and that’s what irks her detractors. Petty people that they are.
Wishful thinking on some fools part.
Just a coincidence I'm sure...LOL.
“Palins point with regard to Steele seemed to me to be that he was not hostile to the tea party and was reaching out to them”
That may, or may not be enough. I tend to think it’s not enough. “Transforming the GOP INTO the Tea Party” will not happen without convulsions, fits and pitched battles.
I’ve talked to so many people in the movement that are sick and tired of the GOP establishment pubbies having their way over the past 20 years or so and are just maneuvering around them the best way possible. It’s not an easy course to chart for sure - especially for those that are trying to run for office.
On the other hand, saving this nation will not be an easy course to chart - but do so we must.
It may not have been that she spurred DeVore so much as spurred those like myself who couldn’t stand Fiorina. I don’t dislike Sarah, felt this was a mistake brought on by us who were simply sitting on our hands. I’d been absent from FR and politics in general for too long.
It makes Fr looks foolish!
What you said.
“I would rather have Boxer than carly or Campbell..and I cant really believe I am typing that . But at least Boxer rescinded an award to a CAIR official.”
That is a stunning admission to make on FR.
Boxer-proabortion; antigun;pro-single payer;
Campbell-proabortion; antigun; progayrights
Fiorina- prolife; pro-gun
That is like saying you prefer Al Franken to both Olympia Snowe and Orrin Hatch and that, of the three, you refuse to vote for Hatch because he is not as conservative as Jim Demint. That is crazy.
From allegedly FR is “Palin Country” we’re down to “Nitpick, Bash, Trash, and Tear Down Sarah Palin,” and call her defenders “Sarah Worshippers” -”Cult of Personality” and other such juvenile terms.
That is so true. And probably because he cannot raise enough money, Devore is honest and the best candidate. They know he will not trade his votes for political favors. There is not enough contributions that can be had from smaller, ordinary individual contributors.
We get what large campaign contributors pay for.
If you don't mind, could you please explain to me/us what a ‘Palin hater’ is? I think I might fit *your* definition, yet I don't hate her in the LEAST, and would greatly support her if she's breaks out and certainly if she's the R nominee for POTUS in 2012.
Yet I criticize her, as well as praise her, and tend to catch much flack from overt Palin supporters for POTUS about the criticism part. But I don't criticize vindictively.
Am I a ‘Palin hater?’
Come on - we need to strike a balance with our emotional word plays - imho. ;)
“Jim Bopp, IN state chairman for the GOP is a STRONG Romney supporter and he has been leading the charge to get Steele sacked.”
Al, You have got more insider info than anyone I know. So Palin is supporting Steele to deny Romney what he wants. Whenever something nefarious is afoot, you can bet Romney’s greasy fingers are on it.
