Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

We haven’t reached the “cats and dogs” stage yet. We’re still at the “can I buy you a drink, you bastard?” stage. ;)
I have made multiple posts on this thread, and every thread I've ever posted on, about the sanctity of life. On this thread I have said I grieved for Laura's lack of understanding on this issue.
You need to work on your "perception" and stick with reality.
Sorry, D1. Conversation over.
I hear our (Willamett Valley) Pinot Noir is quite good this year.
Don't misunderstand. I said they would vote for Dems and other leftists, but I was just stating what struck me as an irony.
There are conflicting reports about the abortion rates. I would expect the abortion rate to be higher for legal Hispanics than illegals, as they "assimilate" and some of them start embracing pro-abortion groups. You did notice that they are out-reproducing Anglos and Blacks?
That you can't tell the difference between polite diplomacy and political dogma is disturbing. And that you can't see thru the obvious on-going campaign of Leftist slander against ALL the Republican presidents, surprises me.
Deb, expressing the belief that women deserve the right of "Choice", is not one of my failings. Dogma, Diplomacy, personal opinion, it really doesn't matter does it?
And insulting people who know are conservatives, but who dare to believe George Bush was a dedicated conservative who did his best against an avalanche of opposition, "Bushbots" and "in love" is beneath you. I expect it from the usual malcontents who scream "RINO" at every Republican who makes a dumb or diplomatic, unconservative comment to the press, but I thought you at least attempted to check things out.
Deb, I'm addressing a person who admits in one offering that Larua made a mistake, and in another says that the reactions to that acknowledged mistake are ludicrous.
The mistake being admitted to by the person I am addressing, I'm somewhat baffled by your assessment that I have unfairly categorized Laura's admission.
I would suggest you stick to the reality that Laura did make a mistake, and quit trying to dictate how people react to that mistake.
As for this conversation, it will be over when you quite trying to spin your confusing comments on the matter, to me.
“you are neither hot, nor cold” I will spew you from my mouth.
She’s already been there, done that. It was, I believe, her first stop on this lame book tour.
It’s over right now. You may have the last word.
Because of her mother's history, I wouldn't waste my time asking Mrs.Bush that particular question. There was no reason for her married mother to ever consider abortion, in fact quite the opposite was true. In the various interviews that she has done for her book, she has said that her parents wanted a big family and that her mother had several miscarriages. Laura has said that she was acutely aware of the sadness that those losses caused her parents.
Laura Bush doesn’t understand God’s position on marriage. It wasn’t social values or custom that made marriage from the beginning, it was GOD. He instituted marriage and how life was created. Marriage is God’s idea not man’s. Laura Bush is so wrong on these issues. I feel sad for George having to put up with such stupidity in his own house. But then I think his own mother is pro-abortion. There has to be better identification of conservative Republicans and who and what they are before we go buying their books.
And why he boycotted the Falwell funeral after Jerry Falwell endorsed GHWB in 1988.
No, she is not teachable. Being in the elite is all that matters to her.
To understand you have to start from the beginning when the APA removed homosexuality from the DSM in 1973. It is in “Sexual Politics And Scientific Logic: The Issue Of Homosexuality” which used to be published on online in its entirety but apparently no longer available. I found an excerpt at PFOX but organizations like them and NARTH are so unfairly discredited by the medical community I never cite them as a source. http://www.pfox.org/Removal_of_homosexuality.html. However I see you can purchase the 22 page paper from NARTH however, probably copyrighted after Socarides death. The battle between Charles Socarides and Robert Spitzer is at the heart of the controversy. The bottom line is homosexuality was removed from the DSM for political reasons not scientific reasons. What the excerpt does not include, unfortunately, is it came down to a vote by the some 10,000 members of the APA with the removal winning 56% to 42% and 2% abstaining. Science is like math, it’s replicable. You can no more vote on what 2 + 2 equals than you can with medicine. And that’s the shocking reality.
Well I said it would be over when the spin stopped, and now it is.
Later.
No, she is running for being a major celebrity; that more important to the American people than some dumb office.
THIS is your first accusation.....
Didn't you state she hadn't been wrong on abortion?
That I agreed with Laura on abortion, which I, of course, don't, and everyone clearly knows that.
Then you morphed your accusation into THIS....
I would suggest you stick to the reality that Laura did make a mistake, and quit trying to dictate how people react to that mistake.
Leaving behind your accusation that I was not pro-life and turning it into a completely different accusation that I won't admit that "Laura did make a mistake."......whatever that means
So therefore, there is no possible way to continue the conversation because you keep changing and confusing it. Anything I say to refute your argument, can and most likely will be turned into something totally different in your next post.
Conclusion......I am completely and utterly pro-life, and praying that Laura will be too, especially since she loves and respects her pro-life husband so deeply.
See you around, DoughtyOne.
I saw a few minutes of her interview with Larry King and when she started saying how people who love each other should be allowed to marry, I changed the channel.
Sickening. Are there no true conservatives left in the political arena?
One could argue that the Dems have blown a similar "opportunity" by infuriating independents, even quicker than in the GWB era. On the other hand, obamacare will be a curse that will be damned hard to cure.
Your spin is clearly pointed out in my last post.
