Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

Laura Bush never ran for any office. She is non-political, and always has been.
I submit that her willingness to now promote her views of homosexual marriage and abortion now makes her just one more political animal in the media. To say that she 'never ran for any office' and is non-political is a bit disingenuous in my view, there is no such thing as a 'non-political' First Lady or former First Lady, and we all know it, and while Laura's first name certainly never appeared on any ballot, her last name certainly did, attached to 'George, W.', true?
If the voters had preferred Tipper Gore in even slightly greater numbers, there is a good chance George and Laura would have returned to Crawford Texas in 2000, instead of heading to Washington, so I don't buy that argument about First Ladies not being a factor in politics, they most certainly are, as I see it.
There is no relationship between her view of abortion and Sarah Palin's........only her husband's.
Laura and Sarah are both women. And have a unique perspective of the issue of abortion that quite frankly, us men can never have.
And her husband's view is as pro-life as Sarah's. Thankfully, he is being recognized for that, and is continuing to speak out for the sanctity of life, long past any so-called 'pandering' to the 'religious right' (never a true statement, ever). In addition, Laura, in this same book and in interviews, has clearly stated that whatever was wrong with her babies, she would have them and love them. Just like Sarah, Todd, and Trig. Your 'suspicions' are completely wrong, mk.
Please note that my 'suspicions' were based on the *possible* events in an alternate universe, but I stand corrected on events in THIS universe, nevertheless. If Laura said that regarding her own then-unborn children, I will be the first to say more power to her, however that sentiment actually creates more of a juxtaposition.
btw, my husband married a young woman he found in a Baptist church choir. ;)
You are incredibly more tolerant than I ever suspected, and I confess to wondering, how did he avoid a local indictment for bigamy?
(cue joke about "that's mighty big o' you", "NO, that's mighty big o' ME!" ... [j/k, I know what you meant! ;)]

I’m speechless. What a complete sellout to the left and its immoral agenda. Now we know, in part, why George W could never get very exercised about conservative social issues.

I dont think she has a clue how unfortunate this revelation is.We can turn this revelation into a positive for Laura, if we all commit ourselves to pray for her understanding in this area.
People who are pro-life want others to grow. I'm sure her husband does. WE should too. Shouldn't we?
If every committed pro-life person prays for her, it could make a difference.
The prayers of the righteous avail much.

Prayers for her to change her mind.
May she learn to stand up for life!
Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,
And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death
by the Resurrection of Your Son.
I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself
Never to be silent,
Never to be passive,
Never to be forgetful of the unborn.
I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
And never to stop defending life
Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
And our nation once again becomes
A nation with liberty and justice
Not just for some, but for all.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen!

I was merely pointing out that we have never had a requirement for the First Lady to have the same views as her husband. Nancy didn't Laura doesn't.
I don't believe I've ever made the case that our First Ladies must have the same views as thier husband. Their views stand on their own IMO.
I do however think that a wife voicing an opinion different from her husband's under such a situation would be unfortunate. Laura's comment came after her husband left office. That is the proper time to express such opinions. I still think she was wrong to do so, and it will have negative impact on young impressionable minds.
I am deeply dismayed that Laura hasn't yet understood the importance of the sanctity of life from inception, but I would think that the best thing for us to do is to pray for her (and I do).
I agree.
Your initial statement that this hurts Laura's "conservative footing" remains an incorrect analysis.
Not at all... This is going to cause a lot of people to take a pass on her book. It's going to impact their view of Laura also.
Oh.........and I deal with the truth all the time, but thanks for the psychological assessment of my inadequacy. :)
Well both of us would like to think so, but only one of us does. ;-)
And as for my astute assessment, it's worth the money you paid to get it, darn it!

You’re right. She didn’t lie directly. She just let Conservatives *assume* that she was a Conservative. It’s a lie by ommission.

I was so looking forward to reading her book. No longer! But I will keep her and especially our country’s leaders in my prayers!

RE :”Whatever the case, it gives people who wish to kill the unborn, one more person to point to that says its okay.”
Don’t misunderstand me. She LB clearly thinks abortion is OK. She clearly said she supports Roe vs Wade as a woman’s constitutional right to abortion. I was just saying this set of interviews is all about selling her book to Megan McCain type RINOs who have similar views.

LOL to the joke at the end.
As for Laura, I would really recommend that you read her entire book. It won't keep you from being deeply disappointed at her views on these two issues, but it will give you a deeper insight into who she is, and the depth of her character.
It is true that she is 'attached' to George W, but so was Nancy to Ronnie (who met, incidentally in Hollywood, and not at a back yard barbeque in Texas, and certainly not in a Baptist church!), but unless you can come up with anyone who voted for him because of her, your argument falls flat.
No one knew a thing about her in 2000. People were comparing her to Mamie Eisenhower, for goodness' sake! She was a shy librarian who grew into being a classy First Lady who helped the nation through some really tough times.
I grieve at her lack of understanding about the sanctity of life, but it has made me more concerned about her, and not less. She needs to 'get' this, and I will be praying for her to do just that. I think with how much she valued her own babies and would never have ended their lives under any circumstances, she is "teachable."

Her book is absolutely wonderful. It reads like a high quality novel, and is beautiful as literature, and gives great insight, not only into who she is, but what this country is. Reading it made me even more proud to be an American.
But she does need prayer in this area, and I'm sure she will benefit from it.

First Lady Laura Bush has always been pro-abortion, but I didnt know she also supports gay marriage until I watched LKL that I TIVOd last night. UGH.
Her progressive (and I think unconscionable) views are hers and she didnt influence her husband, President Bush.
Are you sure about that?

To: sickoflibs
I don’t disagree with you. Well, I may to a certain extent, because while it’s clear to me this is her core belief, I do believe she may have put it in there to sell books.
To the extent that is true though, it’s really unseemly. It begs the question what people won’t do to sell books.

"Laura Bush is anything but dumb." Sad - but true. Notice how she waited till NG boy was out of office till she exposed her thoughts on slaughtering the unborn and offering the blessings of the state to deviants :^(
To: ohioWfan
I thought it would be. I admired Laura Bush. She was a beautiful First Lady who exhibited great class. But alas, I shall have to pass on buying her book and instead donate the money to a pro-life charity. For me, it’s the right thing to do.

RE Laura, Cheney:
Sadly, it just shows me how compromised we really are.
These people can stand up one day and pretend to be one thing, and in reality are something entirely different, and the folks in the country who are desperate to believe in someone/something just run right along after them...
Had a lot of respect for her. Now, not so much. I won’t trash her, though. She never tried to force it on me and mine by force of law, so that’s to her credit.
The choices people make regarding those issues are between them and God, and they will answer for it; when they try to coerce /force me to buy into it, then it becomes a different matter entirely.
What a sad, sorry thing to hear.

‘Spoken from the Heart’
“For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.”
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.”
The Bush family needs to find another Church that nurtures the heart rather than deceives the heart.

You think someone who is considering an abortion is going to care what Laura Bush thinks about it?
No, but it expands the definition of what it means to be a Republican or a Conservative. "Hey, Laura Bush thinks abortion is OK, so it must be OK." "Laura Bush thinks gay marriage is OK, so it must be OK." What we don't need is the Republican party going any more to the Left.
