Quite the revealing private conversation, overheard on the Capitol Hill tram by a Fox News producer. I paraphrase:

SEN. ARLEN SPECTER (D., PA.): "You better watch out Orrin, [former Club for Growth president and Specter challenger Pat] Toomey's coming to get you next."

SEN. ORRIN HATCH (R., UTAH): "What's that?"

SEN. ARLEN SPECTER (D., PA.): "The Club for Growth, they're coming for you just like they came for me."

SEN. ORRIN HATCH (R., UTAH): "Man, they really savaged Bob [Bennett (R., Utah)]. They're coming for Republicans."

Hatch used to be really good, but like many of the old guard he has gotten to comfortable negotiating away his values for the sake of senate "commity" (or is that comedy).

He ain't no Specter, but it is time for him to go.

In 1976 in his first run for public office, he was elected to the United States Senate, defeating Democrat Frank Moss, a three-term incumbent. Among other issues, Hatch criticized Moss's 18-year tenure in the Senate, saying that .... Moss, had lost touch with constituents. Hatch surpassed Moss' Senate tenure in 1995, having served for nearly double that period of time as of 2009. He is the longest-serving Senator in Utah history, eclipsing previous record-holder Reed Smoot( Smoot Hawley anyone? ) in 2007.[1]

He never had to be a Specter. Utah politics is much simpler that Pennsylvania. So, I wouldn’t give Hatch credit for playing on a easier political field.

Sen. Bennett got fired; Hatch is next. When Utah sends you to Congress - they expect you to represent Utah’s population. He chose instead to do what he wanted to, ‘reach across the aisle’ and not object and use every means at his disposal to oppose Obama’s healthcare.

It’s really that simple. He went, he failed; so we’ll send someone else there ... and if he fails .... there will be someone else new the next time.
