A proposed license plate that would allow drivers to express pride in Florida's Hispanic heritage could become available soon to many of the 3.8 million Latinos who call the state home.
The "Hispanic Achievers" plate made it to the short list of several tags attached to bills passed by the Legislature.
It is heading to the desk of Gov. Charlie Crist, who could veto the bill, sign it into law or allow it to pass by default if he does not act within 15 days. A Crist spokesman said Tuesday that the governor has not yet received the bill.
The proposal, presented by the National Hispanic Corporate Achievers in Longwood, has evolved from an early sketch in 2008 that boldly stated "Hispanics Discovered Florida" to a more low-key message about Hispanics' contributions to the state's economy.
The plate's first draft drew criticism after some people, including some American Indian tribes, complained that the message was historically inaccurate.
The latest inscription on the tag reads "Hispanic Achievers" followed by a motto that stresses the contributions of the state's Latino residents: "Since 1513. Helping Communities Prosper."

(L-R) Danny Ramos and Jay Rosario, former and current president of Hispanic Achievers, show the
proposed new design of the Hispanic license plate, on Tuesday, May 11, 2010. The redesigned plate
shows a Spanish galleon sailing before a rising. The inscription on it reads Hispanic Achievers followed
by a motto that affirms the historical roots of Hispanics in the state: Since 1513. Helping Communities Prosper.
It is the new incarnation of the proposed Hispanic car (Ricardo Ramirez, Orlando Sentinel / May 10, 2010)
“My Hispanic can beat up Your Hispanic” coming next.
I’m a white guy. What can I put on my plate?
ok let this ol gringo get this straight before the whackos arrive. Hispanic does not mean mexican!!!!!!!!!! It really means person of Spanish speaking heritage....
And for the record...but not publized much....most Latins look down upon the mexicans. Think of them as uncivilized and criminal types.
the plate is totally historically inaccurate too.
Think they will be pulled over more?
Some crow.
but we were not allowed to have a southern heritage plate until it went to court much like the save life plate
the sooner crist and his RINO’s piss off out of this state the better
>>Im a white guy. What can I put on my plate?<<
“Born Racist” — what else? (/liberal government)
Who will get the extra $30.00 per tag?
“my white guy job paid for your illegal hispanic kids school”
you can bet your house that if they’re pulled over they will say it was done racially and use it as an excuse to get out of a ticket
there is no way this plate should be given the go ahead
Spanish Florida was so "prosperous" that the English gave it back to Spain after the American Revolution in exchange for Caribbean islands. If you look at a map of Florida the only community labeled is St. Augustine, the original Spanish colony.
Actually, I think a historical reference would be better.
But the thing about these plates is that a percentage is supposeded to go to a program for support. People buy them to support a cause. We have tons of them in FL.
we have too much on our plate already, what with us paying for everyone else to sit back and collect....but here is something you can put on your plate..
Current, paid for tags.
No disrespect to anyone, however, here goes. The state of Florida has more than one hundred and fifty license plates from which to choose. This place is a joke.
We need special “illegal” plates here in CA. Kinda like a “learner” sign on a car. People know to stay clear.
