Republican in Virginia Primary Donated to Obama
Human Events ^ | 5/12/10 | Michelle Oddis

Scott Rigell, running as the favorite of the GOP establishment in the Republican primary in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, donated $1,000 to Barack Obama, according to opensecrets.com, a research group that tracks money in politics.

“Rigell was one of the highest Obama donors in the zip code,” Scott Taylor told HUMAN EVENTS. Taylor, a former Navy SEAL and local business owner, is also running in the Republican primary.

Taylor, whose campaign slogan is “Send a SEAL not a RINO,” said, Rigell "didn’t even vote in the Republican primary, and then gave $1,000 to Barack Obama on March 10,” 2008.

“In November Republicans will aim at the Democrats, but for now their only expression is against the Republican establishment, and that’s who Rigell is,” said former Rep. Tom Davis (R.-Va.). “He gave money to Obama, he gave money to Mark Warner, and Louise Lucas, who is a Democrat state senator down there.”

On a local blog, Rigell responded by saying that, “The only alternative on the Democratic side was Senator Obama. Yes, I was moved by his rhetoric and by the prospect of seeing a minority rise to the highest office in our land. If we were to end up with a Democrat President I wanted that person to be Obama, not Clinton; I was not indifferent to the two possible outcomes.”

Rigell also supported the economic stimulus and through the Cash for Clunkers program received $444,500 from the U.S. taxpayers to benefit his automobile dealership. When asked about accepting the money, Rigell said, " I had no ethical problem whatsoever."

Okay, you lost me -- if you're a Republican, what difference does it make, what do you care about the *Democrat alternative*??

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but wouldn't a woman be considered a "minority rise to the highest office"? (Quoting him, pardon the poor grammar here). 0bama considered a minority, but isn't Hillary Clinton also?? Not buying it, this guy is a typical *say/do whatever it takes to win office* politician -- he's reminding me of many pols who claimed to be Republican in order to ride Reagan's coattails back in 1980 -- Specter, anyone?

OK, I’ll tell you this. If Tom Davis is saying the guy is a RINO, then the guy must be REALLY REALLY bad. Because Tom Davis used to be my Congressman, and he was a very moderate politician in his own right.

I generally see Tom on the side of other moderates, not bashing them. So I really hope this guy loses the primary.

Very disappointing — the worst news I’ve read all day. I met Rigell in 1998 and he’d seemed like such a stand-up guy — he started up Freedom Ford in the Hampton Roads, VA area in the mid-1990s, putting a lot of revenue into the region and creating jobs.

Right after the 9-11 terror attacks he put out some really inspiring radio PR spots, urging listeners to pull together, support our national government and military, and defeat the terrorists.

So, I’m not getting this... did he somehow think electing 0bama was going to help his business??? I can almost wrap my mind around it if it were only in the Dem primary and he was hard-driven to NOT see Hillary get the nomination. But to throw $ to Mark Warner, and that uber-lib shrew Louise Lucas?? Inexcusable!

I WAS going to contribute to his campaign.. but now... hell no!!

“Yes, I was moved by his rhetoric and by the prospect of seeing a minority rise to the highest office in our land”

Then you are far too fatally stupid to be allowed into ANY office.

We The People will clean the political feces out of our government regardless of party. May disgrace follow these traitors to the end of their days and may they rot together forever.

“Why can’t we find responsible people to serve in our government. It is like a disease.”

It absolutely is a disease, and it’s killing the nation. Politics by it’s very nature tends to attract people with large egos. Not a flaw in and of itself, but certainly something the broken system, or disease, exploits.
Now, imagine, who in their right mind would subject themselves and their family to the scrutiny of running for elected office. If there is anything in your life you don’t want in the papers, you skip running for office. That eliminates a lot of smart, dynamic people.
Next, it costs a huge amount of money to win even a state race. So, by the time you get into an office beyond city councilman, you owe a lot of people a lot of favors. The politician loses his or her ability to function for the greater good.

So, who is in office? A lot of people with huge egos, relatively clean backgrounds, who owe their political lives to major contributors.

But, regardless of how inept, or owned a Republican is, donation to Obama eliminates you, 100%, for anything. That person should be kicked out of the party, we don’t need that kind.

There's also Ben Loyola running, and while I don't know about this race, some conservative virginia blogs are touting him.

Which of course might be why the RINO could win, if we are splitting the conservative vote again.

Ben Loyola for Congress"

If a Moderate is calling him a liberal RINO, he must be pretty far left.

If he plays identity politics and also fell for Obama’s BS, then he has no business being a Republican candidate. He can run for dogcatcher.

A third-party also-ran. Hasn't said what he stands for, other than he's NOT the others.

Damn! I’m glad I read this. He does seem like a good guy and his commercials hit all the right themes. I hadn’t heard much about the other guys but this changes everything.

Disregard. Just saw his website. He has the backing of that great conservative stalwart Mel Martinez, however.

There is also some idiot conservative who already announced he’s running as an independent (Kenny Golden), claiming that the primary is rigged.

It’s like we are TRYING to get Glenn Nye re-elected.
