‘Injury’ was just an excuse for Tiger to quit
NBC Sports ^ | May 9, 2010 | Mike Celizic

And now there’s yet another new experience Tiger Woods has to deal with. And it’s the last thing we ever thought we’d see from the man who used to be the greatest golfer most of us had ever seen.

He quit Sunday in the final round of the Players Championship. Picked his ball up on the seventh hole, said his neck hurts, and didn’t even walk off the course. He climbed in a golf cart and rode off into the metaphorical sunset. Except that little kid running behind him wasn’t yelling, “Come back, Shane!” He was yelling, “"Tiger, say so long to No. 1! Kiss it goodbye!"

OK, the kid said that Saturday, after Tiger limped in about 10 strokes off the lead. But it’s the thought that counts, and the thought was that Tiger’s had it.

I’m very pro-Tiger, myself, but the withdrawal raises a real question.

Against the “he’s faking it” theory I would say:

He was in the last round with 11 holes to go.

He was giving up money by quitting.

He would have suffered no further humiliation by finishing.

He casts a darker shadow over his comeback by quitting.

In favor of the theory? Dunno, but you gotta wonder.

Say, do you think Lee Westwood has done steroids? That crossed my mind, and once it does ...

Tiger’s no saint, but these vicious sports “journalists” are worse than piranhas.

He’s injured. It happens to lots of athletes.

I think you are over thinking the situation, like most cynics-they see a chance to criticize his golf game based on off the course “transgressions.”

He was off for 5 months and finished tied for 4th in the Masters. His golf will be fine once he is healthy-maybe even better.

I don’t condone his off course affairs, but I also don’t think it is my place to judge his private life without any knowledge. That is between the two parties involved-certainly not me.

Some might say, they had an understanding when he was on the road...But, when he brought Rachel to Australia (and then the story broke by N.E.)it reached a new level. He may have had feelings for her. You never know.

Then the argument, the wreck, and women out of the woodwork looking for their Andy Warhol moment. Let the tabloid circus begin...

Golf is not even a real sport. How did he get injured? Drink cart girl ran over his foot?

No way Tiger was faking it. You have seen his body of work since he won three straight US Juniors and three straight US AM titles.

Did I forget 14 majors and 88 tournaments worldwide since 1996. Ernie Els is second with 43....Phil has won 34 times since that point.

Tiger is not a quitter.

As for Lee Westwood-no way on PED’s.

Tim Clark from South Africa won the tournament with steady, if not specatacular, play. I like Tiger, but lets celebrate the winner and not dwell on the soap opera.

By the way, no way does Tim Clark do steroids. Fish and chips chased with a pint, maybe, but not steroids.

Golf is not even a real sport.

I had the privilege of attending the 1992 US Senior Open at Saucon Valley, and got to see Arnold Palmer up close. He was a frikkin' ape! His left arm was hyper-developed, and his only natural stance was over a golf ball, with his left shoulder lower than his right.

So, sport or not, it entails unique and extreme exertions. They were talking about Ryuji Imada this weekend, who almost didn't play due to injury. He had cracked ribs! From swinging so hard because he's small of stature.

Tiger is not a quitter.

He never has been, but he's in new territory. He's getting older, for one thing. He's starting to break down. As I said, I am and remain pro-Tiger. Here's hoping for the best.

He never should have come back in the first place. His best bet is to shut up and ride off into the sunset.

If he can salvage his marraige, fine. If not, so be it. Tiger Woods is as rich as midas. He can go fishing after he makes sure that his family is financially secure. Frankly speaking, I am tired of hearing about him.

He also needs to pick his battle more wisely. If he had no chance to win, and could have injured himself more, he was wise to withdraw. Before he would have played on for pride, which is probably one of the reasons his knees got so messed up.

Pathetic... Tiger may have an excuse, you however, do not.

Well...he sure quit today. No mistaking his actions at TPC-Sawgrass here on May 9, 2010. He just quit.

He's probably never again going to be the fearsome force on the course he has been accustomed to being. His competitors just don't fear him anymore, and most of his erstwhile fans now regard him with some level of derision. His mystique has been shattered, along with the rest of his life.

He's probably not going to become as pathetic as today's version of John Daly, but he's at real risk of becoming just another pro with a set of sticks and a PGA card.

His story is reminiscent of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun on his wings of wax. We all remember what happened to him.

If he was using PEDs, the sport and the public should know.

Just remember what I have been telling people all along--

Tigah teh Cheetah

is being piled on by the Media Hive to deflect attention away from another one of their phony, fraudulent, made-up confections:

-Komrade ZerØ--

They are both cotton candy, a high calorie, substance-free construct spun up by the Press/Entertainment/Infotainment wings of the great media bird of prey- there simply is no "there," there...

The author is so ill-informed his premise is wrong. Not new, Tiger has quit mid-tournament before.
