Facebook turns on Sarah Palin
Politico ^ | May 6, 2010 11:38pm | Andy Barr

Former Alaska GOP Gov. Sarah Palin's endorsement of Carly Fiorina in California's Senate race has prompted a fervent blowback on her Facebook page, long Palin's safe haven for delivering her message.

The revolt is coming from Palin supporters who also back Chuck DeVore – a tea party favorite who is campaigning against Fiorina in the Republican primary.

Palin’s Facebook page is littered with comments opposing her endorsement of Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett Packard.

“The only REAL CONSERVATIVE is Chuck DeVore. Fiorina is a RINO and we don't need any more of those in [California],” one irate commenter wrote. “Why wouldn't you back Chuck DeVore???”

The impassioned revolt from some of her most faithful supporters prompted Palin to update her post to “add a few things about my Carly endorsement because some reaction right out of the chute calls for more information.”

In her original post, Palin made no mention of Fiorina’s social views, but in the update Palin touted the former CEO’s opposition to abortion rights.

“Carly has been endorsed by the National Right to Life, the California Pro-Life Council, and the Susan B. Anthony List,” Palin wrote of Fiorina. “She is pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, pro-military, and pro-strict border security and against amnesty.”

“Carly is also a strong supporter of the Second Amendment,” she added. “Like me, she is a member of the NRA, has a 100% NRA rating, and she and her husband are gun owners. She is pro-energy development and believes as I do in an all-of-the-above approach to energy independence. She is against cap and tax. And most importantly, Carly is the only conservative in the race who can beat Barbara Boxer.”

“Instead, you don’t mind a very liberal RINO as a senator?

Keep in mind that Fiorina’s platform is a conservative one. It is true some are a bit suspect about this, as there isn’t any record in office, but she could well be what she claims. And Palin has met her, sometimes you need to go with that personal contact in deciding about people.”

You make some good points - but DeVore’s support - such as it is - is pulling Carly to the right. That’s in part my point. That is good. Especially if she wins...but she needs to turn and address and even embrace us - the Tea Partiers - and not presume our support, right?

No I don’t want the liberal RINO to win - that’s what makes some primaries particularly tricky.

I think AZ was less tricky. I wish Palin had stayed OUT of that.

I don't disagree with that philosophy. We have no disagreement. Your comment just smacked of entitlement when I read it. I see that I didn't read it as you intended it. No problem.

Confusing you with facts is likely a waste of time, since your mind is already made up, but what the hell...Let’s start with TARP...btw, Palin was for it too! I was one of Palin’s biggest supporters during the election, but FACTS have changed my mind...What do you do when presented with new facts...oh, that’s right, dig in and try to slander the messenger!

[snip]Bottom line up front: Carly Fiorina was a major voice in support of the Wall Street bailouts in autumn 2008. There is ample evidence documenting this.

Fiorina was John McCain’s senior economic advisor when he suspended his campaign and returned to Washington, D.C. to help craft what became TARP and the Wall Street bailouts. Her role at the time was one that she described (see http://bit.ly/2d2q3A) as “a point person for the McCain campaign on economic and business issues.” If she wishes to claim she opposed those bailouts, despite speaking repeatedly in favor of them, one of two conclusions flows from her assertion: she was a wholly irrelevant advisor, or her conscience did not compel her to depart the McCain campaign despite a difference of opinion that can only be described as monumental. Journalists should ask Carly Fiorina which of the two she prefers.

McCain-backed GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina hearts Jesse Jackson — and radical gender politics

http://michellemalkin.com/2010/01/23/mccain-backed-gop-senate-candidate-carly-fiorina-hearts-jesse-jackson/

[snip]As if California GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina’s massive bailout-supporting economic advice for John McCain wasn’t bad enough (reminder from yesterday’s column: “In California, McCain’s PAC supports former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina – a celebrity name with deep pockets of her own, massive media exposure, and a checkered business record. Fiorina served as the economic adviser to McCain, who supported the $700 billion TARP bailout, the $25 billion auto bailout, a $300 billion mortgage bailout, and the first $85 billion AIG bailout.”), now comes the revelation of that she has had a long political love affair with Jesse Jackson.

It’s on tape, via Neil Stevens of RedState: “When Carly Fiorina speaks on the campaign trail here in California, running to be the Republican nominee to unseat Barbara Boxer, she tries to prohibit recording of her speeches. However somebody snuck in an audio recorder to an event yesterday, and these clips seem to show why she would do that. The real, private Carly seems to be a bit different from the public, ‘conservative’ Carly.”

Listen for yourselves as she coos about “the Reverend Jesse Jackson” and panders to gender quota-mongers at a women’s conference held last week:

Fiorina continues to cast herself as a “mainstream conservative.” But what exactly is “mainstream” or “conservative” about heaping praise on one of this country’s greediest and unrepentant race hustlers?

I guess you missed the part where I said “I *agree* the RINO label might be premature” or you chose to ignore it.

I apologize for throwing all of that at you. My comments were directed at the larger group of RINO witch-hunters in general. I should have made that clear.

I am wary of Carly, for the reasons you and others have mentioned, but I'm not going to fire any RINO bullets at her yet. She does appear to be the best choice of conservatism + electability at this point, and make a LOT of sense for Sarah in terms of political favors.

I agree with Palin. This is the only likely outcome of this election. Devore will lose to Cambell, even if she endorsed him. I don’t want Cambell and I don’t want Boxer. The only viable alternative is Fiorina. Not the best choice but the ONLY choice. BTW, California tea partiers, for the most part, agree with Palin on this endorsement. If you aren’t from CA then tough sh**, worry about your own state.

Absolutely. And it really shook my support. But this Fiorina endorsement is nothing like her McCain moment, it is the smart thing to do as far as I'm concerned.

Hold her feet to the fire, just like we would do with any other politician.

Absolutely. Yet, one cannot help but admire the fact that she does not back down, or away, from a decision she believes to be the correct one.

Viva La Palin!

Understood.

I’ve lived in pretty liberal states and just getting a moderate to an election win is tough enough with the internal bickering.

People whine about former Rep Simmons here in CT running for Senate since they labeled him a RINO, but you know what? I seriously doubt he would be worse than Dodd for our side.

Of course now that Dodd is stepping down and a donkey approved replacement (Blumenthal) is waiting in the wings, I doubt he or Linda McMahon have a chance.

The CA donkey party should have done the same with Babs.

Well thanks for the detailed reply, and links.

It may be true that Fiorina is not a cookie cutter conservative, though the article by Malkin seems to be stretching the ties and implications with Jackson etc.

But where is the proof that the positions she presents are fabricated, or in the case of the bailout that she was the decision maker and not just part of the team (like Palin).

And don’t get me wrong - I wouldn’t vote for her if there were viable alternatives either. But it is California, and DeVore isn’t made of the right stuff.

As you imply, it is not convincing. But thanks in any case, a good read.

Well, in that case, how are you going to offset and overcome the effects of the mass media, let alone the effects that decades of Liberal indoctrination in our nation's public school system have had on people?

If you vote for the conservative who is certain to lose, in the end you still lose, and you're still stuck with the viper (who you wanted out) who was in office in the first place.

Principled action is fine, and has it's place, for sure, but you have to have both feet planted firmly on the ground to successfully withstand the effects of "stern reality".

As a previous poster said, we didn't get here overnight, and we're not going to change things overnight. We have to be realistic about our chances, and put them in proper context. California is not Idaho or Alabama. We have to remember that.

We take our victories, however small, wherever we find them.

CA....

I can understand that....Of course her time at HP will be a big fat target for the Boxer folks if she gets that far. However, that may backfire on Boxer because she will pull a lot of support from Simi Valley.

A+

An endorsement of Devore might throw him into double digits in the polls-—maybe from 8% to 12%? Fiorina is within striking distance of Campbell (who would be as bad as Boxer) and while not perfect, would be FAR FAR better than either Campbell or Boxer. Devore needs to man-up and get out of the race; he is nothing but a spoiler.

If this were not CA, different story.

“But working with someone like Fiorina who has access to big $$$ is the shrewd political move.”

So she’s an unprincipled politician out to line her own pockets and resume...just like all the rest?

I thought Palin was a Maverick...err, Roguish? She was supposed to be different, not your usual DC politician, incorruptible?

All your telling us is it’s “business as usual” with Palin.

The reaction of the Palinistas has been interesting on this Fiorina endorsement.

Some of them are disappointed in her for endorsing a “RINO.”

Others, of course, are OK with it because she is Saint Sarah, and everything she does is right.

Uhhh, except, you know, for that whole governor thingy.

We know what it took to make her resign as Alaska’s governor, what will it take if she is President?
