Seventeen people have been accused of taking part in a scheme that paired Russian woman and U.S. Navy personnel in bogus marriages, federal prosecutors in Virginia said.
All of the defendants charged in the 28-count indictment have been arrested.
The indictment is the "result of our ongoing effort to crack down on allegations of sham marriages in the Navy," said U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride. The 17 indicted Wednesday are among 80 who have been charged in similar schemes, MacBride said.
The Russian women charged in the scheme obtained U.S citizenship because they married U.S. citizens. The Navy personnel in turn earned additional pay because they were married.
Not holding my breath.
I’d rather have eighty Russian women as citizens than the murdering Times Square bomber who was naturalized last year.
It’s always been one of the biggest issues I had while I was in the Navy—E-3’s who made more than me (an E-6) because of what they had on their finger, and not on their sleeve. I always challenged the married people who told me, “Well, it’s YOUR choice to not get married,” to show me ONE job outside the military which paid married people more than single ones. And it was just as much THEIR choice to get married. It’s a mixed message that has been around for decades—encourage junior people to get into marriages they’re not ready for and will likely fail for a few extra bucks or to move off the ship/out of the barracks.
Too bad JAG went off the air five years ago. This would have made one blockbuster episode for sweeps week! (Catherine Bell could have gone undercover with the seventeen Russian babes to break-up the ring) Would have drawn a 90 share among straight males 13-74...
Did they all look like supermodels or tennis players or Helen Thomas?.................
Who cares - I’ll be dead by then!
Is this equal to women sneaking across the Mex. border to have babies?
IIRC, Catherine Bell is of Persian descent.
You sound bitter about marriage.
The military pays married people more but even then they are largely underpaid.
“Is this equal to women sneaking across the Mex. border to have babies?”
No, the whole anchor baby thing is encouraged by the administration.
Back when I was in this was a very common thing with Filipinas. They would marry the young sailor (from Subic) or airman (from Clark), return with him and stay married the minimum 2 years and then, almost like clockwork, divorce.
Once a single one came in, then it became imperative to give mother, father, brothers, sisters, third cousins, etc., residence visas under the aegis of "family reunification."
I felt bad for some of the young GIs caught in that situation: the girl typically would be the perfect wife for those two years and then, just like a light switch, would turn off...immediately after getting that green card.
That is not the situation here...from what I understand...here, there is not even a pretext of being a real married couple; it is STRICTLY a paperwork exercise and business transaction. She gets the marriage license; he gets the housing allowance.
"Mail order bride" is one thing. But this is another thing altogether, when both parties are in on the deal.
Oh dear...
I was married when i was in the ser5vice...
and double Oh dear (Oh dear Oh dear)
My husband was in the service (and married too)
Death by hanging ???
‘using the leftie practice of equivalency..there is no difference.”
Sure there is, anchor babies brings in more democrat voters. Russian babes probably don’t vote.
True!!!!
