Cardinal Mahony Steps Up Attack on Arizona Immigration Crackdown May 2, 2010

Cardinal Roger Mahony, an outspoken critic of the Arizona crackdown on illegal immigrants, had a message for Arizona officials. "Thank you, Arizona," he said Saturday during a May Day rally in downtown Los Angeles. "Thank you, Arizona." Mahony has emerged as one of the leading voices against the new law. Two weeks ago, he compared Arizona with Nazi Germany after the state passed a strict new law that allowed police to check the legal status of anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant.

But Mahony said the Arizona legislation might turn out to be a net positive, hastening the passage of federal immigration reform. It also gives the Catholic church the chance to "continue our outreach," Mahony said, "an important part of moving on" after sexual-abuse allegations against priests.

Mahony called the Arizona legislation unconstitutional. He also challenged Gov. Jan Brewer to release a set of clear criteria defining what constitutes "reasonable suspicion" that an individual might be undocumented. "They can't," he said. "Because you'd come up with ‘brown skin, black hair and listens to ranchera music.' "

Most of the people the Nazis sent to the gas chambers were not German citizens--they were mostly Jews from Poland and other countries the Germans occupied during WWII.

That said, Cardinal Mahony's comparison of Arizona to Nazi Germany is outrageous and a disgrace.

The Cardinal better spend more time rooting out the pedophile priests within his own boundaries.

He is a disgrace to California.

“Why doesn’t the church fire his butt now? It’d be a good example to others of his type,, and it would reassure regular Americans that the church itself has it’s head on straight.”

Mahoney was already slated for ‘early retirement’. This is him just getting his last shot off for the MSM while they can still call him Cardinal. Takes time to find a good replacement, the Church just can’t dismiss them instantaneously.

You're damn right he wants to "move on", given as these allegations are Roger's real legacy.

Actually, Benedict is not higher. He’s first among equals. Seriously.

Yeah, Benedict can depose a bishop. It’s been done, what, once, in the last 20 years? 50 years.

We’re stuck with him until he turns 75.

And Gomez will be disappointing on this issue.

Bishops are not supposed to endorse or oppose specific legislation. That’s for Catholic lay people to do, to apply the principles taught by bishops to specific situations.

The line between principles and specifics can sometimes be unclear but not in this case.

The religious threads on this forum are very telling.

Our cult is better than your cult; they’re the ten suggestions; kiss up to God and you get past the heavenly doorman....

Now this.

No, Benedict is higher. Mahoney isn’t just a Bishop, he’s a Cardinal.

The ‘first among equals’ applies to the Patriarchs, who at the time were the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch and Constantinople. Only Rome remains, three have lapsed, and Constantinople remains under the Muslims.

The situation reminds me of Nazi Germany.

Mexico is Germany and Arizona is Poland.

It’s not the CHURCH. It’s Mahoney, who’s about to be replaced altogether. He’s a horrible cardinal.

Mahoney's replacement is Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio. Somehow, I'm not convinced that he will be better than Mahoney in illegal immigration issues.

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, and spending his early priesthood in Texas, Archbishop Gomez will become the first Hispanic Archbishop of Los Angeles. When he succeeds Cardinal Mahony in 2011, Archbishop Gomez will head the largest Catholic Archdiocese in the United States, with more than five million members, 70 percent of them Hispanic.

Perhaps it's time to simply recognize that not all church's positions are aligned with American interests. I include here all kind of Christian churches, not only Catholic Church. They are institutions of different nature, and it is very understandable that sometimes their interests are in conflict with each other. Once we recognize these differences, we can work together where their positions are aligned.

>> [Mahony] compared Arizona with Nazi Germany

I wonder how much attention this hysterical fool gives to the tens of thousands slaughtered in Mexico’s ongoing drug war.

I would venture to guess that 99% of these illegals are Catholic

Not at all true currently, 75% might have been a fair number 20 years ago for the relatively few illegals then. Now it is more like 45%, with the remainder being Pentecostal and various evangelical religions, or no religion stated. Catholicism has lost substantial ground in Mexico as the temper and decency of some of the people has worsened.

There is nothing brave nor heroic about Mahoney’s stand. He affords himself huge lib-media accolades and changes the subject from child molestation. Hispanics will love him. It is his constituency, but the advocating of breaking the law is un-American.

It is a win-win for him personally.

A kneejerk reaction, but typical of the man. He has no right to take the side of one party in a political dispute. IAC, a closer comparison with the actons take by the French after WWI to ethnic-cleanse Alsace-Lorraine of German immigrants and people of German descent who were not sufficiently loyal to France who re-annexed the provinces after the war. The French actually issued identity cards to its inhabitants based on “race.” The French were angry that the people of Alsace-Lorraine were not terribly enthusiastic about their re-incorporation into the French Republic.
