While the Republican party is on track to score big victories in 2010, it's in grave danger of committing long-term suicide unless it's rescued from right-wing madness.
Riding a wave of anger at Democrats for spending too much and failing to solve the nation's economic crisis -- yet -- Republicans may even capture control of the House this year.
But consistent -- sometimes ugly -- opposition to immigration overhaul, resistance to climate change remedies, hostility toward gay rights, incendiary language at tea party rallies and waging primaries as ideological purification rituals all represent long-term threats to the party.
So does the perception -- opportunistically spread by Democrats -- that the GOP is merely the "party of no" without constructive ideas for solving national problems.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is not going to be the party's savior -- that has to be its 2012 presidential nominee -- but the more the party follows his advice and example, the better off it will be.
Graham insisted to me in an interview last week, "I want the most conservative guys and gals (as candidates), too."
However, Graham said the GOP will never be a national party until it changes course on immigration and improves its relationship with young people, who voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama.

Please Mort..get a grip.
I’ve watched and read Mort for years. He’s not a RINO, that would be too kind. Everyone sees that he’s really a moderate Liberal..he always tilts to the left and tries to convince people that he’s a “reasonable” republican.
Nothing could be farther from the truth..so his article is inline with his feelings.
One thing about Graham, you never know where he’s coming from on any subject until he sees where the subject is heading. He doesn’t deserve to be in Washington. You can’t rely on him. As for catering to the young, how about catering to the illegals, how about catering to the gays? Never mind catering to the majority of this country that is sick and tired of the BS in Washington and the crooked politicians.
Mort Kondracke has been a RINO for years.
oh, Mort... put a sock in it.
Mort, have ya lost your frikking mind??
“
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is not going to be the party’s savior —...
“
Probably the smartest thing Kondrake has ever said.
Graham is such an enigma...half of his pronouncements are insane,
the other half laudable (especially his public b-tchslaps of Holder
and Napolitano).
If Jed Clampett was still around, he’d say “I need to have a talk
with that boy”.
Is Mort even far enough to the right to be considered a RINO? Isn’t he just a flat out lib who actually catches a whiff of reason once in a blue moon?
Someone misspelled his name with a “t” in it and it must have stuck.
But consistent — sometimes ugly — opposition to immigration overhaul, resistance to climate change remedies, hostility toward gay rights, incendiary language at tea party rallies and waging primaries as ideological purification rituals all represent long-term threats to the party.
So says Mort. Isn’t that french for something?
Been a long time since I heard from Kondracke. He is still the RINO he has always been.
Oh they wish!
Mort, go find an eel to play with.
Wow. Thanks for the advice, Mort. I’m sure it’s purely to help the Republican party and not to advance your personal politics.

* +700,000 Socialista talking points.
bwahahahaha ... that’s right! We need more John McCains! look at how well he did.
What does that even mean? As far as I know the GOP has been a national party for about 150 years. If he means that it should broaden its appeal to please everybody, then he's suggesting that it stand for nothing. That, of course, fits since Mort identifies himself as a 'moderate.'
