The woman who beat Sarah Palin for the beauty queen crown of Miss Alaska in 1984 is setting her sights on her own political career.
Maryline Blackburn, who is mounting a Democratic challenge for a seat in the House of Representatives in Georgia, was Alaskas first African American representative in the beauty pageant. She beat Sarah Palin, Miss Wasilla at the time, who finished as second runner-up in the 1984 pageant but also took home the title of Miss Congeniality.
Unlike her former beauty queen rival, Ms Blackburn, 48, a Grammynominated singer and actress is a fervent supporter of President Obama. She does, however, appear to share Ms Palins penchant for plain-speaking and self-promotion and lost no time yesterday in taking a gentle swipe as she recalled their 1984 encounter.

I'm sure this little woman did no calculating on how to win. It just happened.
It was racist don’t ya know..
Ms Palins career had in no way inspired her own political ambitions

says she’s a long serving activist and ‘mouthy’ kid..
Look out, MIchelle!
“The district is an iffy one.”
You are correct about “iffy”.
But back in the not-so-distant day, Cobb County gave us Larry McDonald.
McDonald was the only sitting member of Congress killed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War (flight 007).
She could eat a corn on the cob through a venetian blind.
This mouthy bunghole would be even more obscure than she is if not for her long ago proximity to, and affirmative action win over Palin.
We all know how this thing beat Sarah.
Yes, we do. I couldn’t resist the rhetorical question.
:) Yep.
Miss Alaska in 1984 is setting her sights on her own political career.Nope sorry were just full up on our quota count try later.
Scoliosis???
Or Paris Hilton Disease (Oh look, a camera! Look at me, look at me)Sorta reminds me of someone else.
"Oh look a camera...er...Of course a camera they're here for ME"
She’s running in State House District 34, it’s GOP-held. I don’t expect her to win it, especially not in a year like this.
article: Democrats typically fare well in cities such as Atlanta, where she is standing in the 34th district.
The district is Smyrna-based, not Atlanta.
Black turnout must have been high in 2008 and that wasn't enough to beat the GOP incumbent.
OK will I assumne that it will be perfectly proper and acceptable to use the fact that she is a former beauty queen to mock and ridicule her and to imply that since she was in a Miss Alaska contest that she therefore must be really really really stupid. Right? Lefties?
