A phony track worker triggered a terror scare inside a lower Manhattan subway tunnel Friday morning - but he turned out to be a despondent college student who wanted to kill himself by ingesting sodium cyanide, police said.
A 20-year-old Pace University student who has been on the school's Dean's List told police he wanted to find a discreet alcove, mix the cyanide pellets with water and ingest it.
"He did not want to be found," said Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD's top spokesman.
"He had no ID on him. He was looking for some isolated place in the system."
The pellets, commercially sold and typically used to clean jewelry, can create a noxious gas when heated.
The suspect did have five flares in his backpack -- along with two liters of water and a quart container of cyanide - but police said the flares could not produce the heat needed to cause any damage.
"This was not a terrorist plot," Browne said. "We believe it was part of a plan for an individual to kill himself alone."
NYC Transit employees on a work train spotted him at 5:30 a.m. in the tunnel connecting the Borough Hall station, in Brooklyn, and the Bowling Green station in lower Manhattan.
The suspect was dressed as a track worker - wearing a hard hat, reflective vest and knee-high boots - but he had no work identification on him, so the employees brought him aboard the train, and police were notified.
He admitted to police he was depressed and wanted to end his life - not kill anyone else. He was still being questioned Friday morning.
Perhaps they are right that the flares wouldn't cause enough heat, but given the amount of trash in those tunnels I'm assuming he could have easily found enough fuel to start a fire strong enough to create the heat necessary...
Emperor Bloomberg doesn’t want the truth to get out. If this kid wanted to kill himself, he could jump off the GW Bridge like the other fruit loops do.

R4F: I ended up posting the article I found about it at the NY Daily News. It contains more information than the AP reports...
I do NOT buy the “suicide only” story.
Agreed — a million ways to do so without going to the hassle of dressing as a subway worker and carrying such a large amount of cyanide.
It would seem to me that someone who wanted to kill themself could find an easier way to do it.
True, but not quite the same article...
Thank you for the link though — it’s good to be able to link various versions of what the MSM is putting out.
You and me both... Why go to so much trouble of dressing as a worker and accessing the tunnels? Easier ways not to be found, also...
Subway tube prevents gas dispersal; poison is concentrated and WAY more lethal; same deal as the 1993 Tokyo subway sarin gas attack.
Worker gear and flares would convince the subway driver to stop and wait, then everyone dies while waiting for the “accident” to clear —fumes are concentrated.
Clearly an attack attempt —muzzie likely.
Yep, that’s what I’m thinking as well... I sure hope the LEOs are (behind the scenes obviously) NOT buying this kid’s story.
No, nothing fishy about this at all. Just some poor chap upset over a breakup...you know how sensitive these kids can be.
Wanna bet the student’s name is Mohammed?
I always thought that, in general, suicidal people didn’t have the energy to plan elaborate things.
We'll likely never know.
A bottle of Tylenol could do it.
Wandering through the tunnels and getting knifed by one of the subway dwelling homeless could do it. Jumping into a rat's nest down there could also do it.
Jumping onto the tracks and getting electrocuted by a third rail.
Don't need to go into a subway to die from cyanide.
Don't even need to heat it up, just ingest it.
Why can’t people just off themselves without inconveniencing the rest of us?
Exactly — and you sure as heck don’t need a QUART of it!

Ya Know....
I’m hoping this lame story is merely inept lying. If authorities really do believe what they’re spouting in this article, and the man actually “convinced police that his plan was to kill himself in an isolated spot by swallowing the chemicals”, NYC is in deep kimchi.
Like you said, why go to the trouble of dressing as a worker and accessing the tunnels? Even if they could somehow rationalize a QUART of cyanide for a suicide—which is ridiculous—who carries flares when trying to NOT draw attention? That’s freakin what they’re for!
Thanks BTLD! Sending in a donation TODAY, myself! Praise God I’m finally able to do so! :)
