Perry criticizes Ariz. law, won't adopt for Texas By Eric Zimmermann - 04/30/10 12:45 PM ET

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is not a fan of the new Arizona immigration law and said he would not consider adopting it for Texas.

In a statement released by his office, Perry said the Arizona provision would distract law enforcement officers from their basic priorities.

"[S]ome aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe," Perry said.

"Our focus must continue to be on the criminal elements involved with conducting criminal acts against Texans and their property. I will continue to work with the legislative leadership to develop strategies that are appropriate for Texas.:

While Perry said he "fully recognize[s] and support a state’s right and obligation to protect its citizens" the Arizona law "would not be the right direction for Texas."

>> He is a RINO who knows how to sound conservative <<

Agreed. Every four years this guy is up for re-election, he spends a few months on the campaign trail giving awesome conservative soundbites, beating his chest and throwing red meat to the crowd about state sovereignty takin' on the feds (texas secession!), stoppin' the slide to socialism, Christian values, no surrender on guns rights, home schoolin', miracle of life, Texas hard work ethics, etc., etc. God, Guns, & County! It sounds magnificent! A bunch of freepers and other conservative activists swoon over his words and tell us what a great conservative icon this guy is.

Then Perry gets re-elected and its back to Governor Goodhair's usual mediocre milquetoast governing style. (Can't offend the illegals, ya know... and gotta meet the Democrats halfway of course)

Personally I've grown tired of it and I know this guy's conservative stump speeches and his governing skills are in completely different ballparks. The guy has been in office over a decade and I grew tired of him after his first term (and I don't even live in Texas!) He's another poster child for term limits.

I almost endorsed Kinky Friedman in 2006 until he revealed his true colors were Dem-lie. Liberals Chris Bell and "Grandma" Strayhorn were non-starters. Then in 2010, the only alternatives were wacky Paulite Debra Medina and the even more milquestoast Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Incredible! It's Texas and we can never get one decent conservative on the ballot for Governor when 3-4 are running in both the primary and general.

I look forward to the day where we can finally get some new leadership in Texas, someone who's conservative bona fides are more than just campaign soundbites. Michael Williams would be ideal, but he's concentrating on heading to the U.S. Senate right now.

I am hoping to see a Republican beat Obama in 2012, and Perry I believe can do it.

He is the longest serving Governor in Texas history, and the American people are not going to replace Obama with someone inexperienced, they will not be in the mood for more on the job training.

Teamed with Palin I think they would be unstoppable.

Perry knows that Republicans won’t vote for White in the general. But after that, he is done.

Only if it's Palin/Perry. I wouldn't support the ticket the other way to.

Perry is a big government RINO, who's beholden to masters other than the people of Texas. I will be voting against Bill White in the Texas gubernatorial election - not for Perry.

It’s pretty amazing that it came to that. Debra Martinez had promise, but then she self-destructed on the Glenn Beck show. Dan Patrick should consider running or at least encourage someone else to.

The only good thing about his renomination is that maybe Kay Hutchison will retire.

Embracing hispanics isn’t the problem. Most of the country, CA included, welcome legal Mexican immigrants. CA has always had a large Mexican and other latin American residency. The difference is they used to mostly be legal. I think you think anyone who wants illegals run out of the country are racist and just won’t quite come out and say it on this forum. Arizonans didn’t cry out for this law because they don’t like “hispanics”(a stupid term)but because they are tired of illegals killing, raping, robbing and committing other crimes in Arizona.

It’s deeper than that. Go to San Diego and then check out a Texas border town. The border in CA is like a demilitarized zone, and the Texas border is virtually seamless. The mindsets are totally different.

Perry’s a lucky guy, he’s the always the best of bad choices on the ballot.

He better not start pissing conservatives off again before November. A victory by the rat can’t be ruled out.

Unfortunately we need him to win to avoid filthy rat interference in the redrawing of the congressional districts.
