Auto bill draft would require black boxes, allow NHTSA to issue quick recalls

All new cars would have to be equipped with "black boxes" that record performance data and federal safety regulators would be granted the authority to order immediate recalls under newly proposed auto-safety legislation being considered by Congress.

The draft of a bill was released Thursday by one of the House committees investigating Toyota's massive recalls for unintended acceleration in its vehicles. Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House commerce committee, and Sen. John D. Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), chair of the Senate commerce committee, have said they intend to collaborate on automobile safety legislation this year.

I guess this would help sort out who’s at fault in a crash, if the info is allowed to be used thus. This could be good or bad; your car could back up your story or drop a dime on you.

So, one malfunction will start a recall?? A black box might be nice but it doesn't necessarily mean it will pick up how the flaw occurred.

For example, that dude with the runaway car that was videod...How do we know he didn't have his foot on the brake and accelerator (sp?) at the same time...

It might have been Rush a few years ago mentioning this.

These “Black Boxes” will be able to track you and see how often you were speeding and where you went at what time, etc.

When your black box is shown to have recorded excessive speed you can expect a ticket in the mail.

Not a good idea, at all.

And what is to keep police from setting up “Safety Checkpoints” where they download blackbox data and compare the GPS locations with vehicle speed, etc etc etc....

The black box lays out the technological groundwork for the taxing of individuals by miles driven.

Also, if the “Government” has instant access to your black box, then PDs all over the US can just start interrogating them wholesale to issue speeding citations.

You’re right, and there is no telling how many thousands of dollars it will add to the price of a car.

I can just see the municipalities’ tax collectors salivating over this one. Why have red light cameras on the occasional corner—and have to split the take with some nuisance contractor—when you can have a little box in every car that will trigger the city’s billing computer to mail out a ticket every time that car exceeds the speed limit?

Dirty secret - pretty much all new cars have black boxes already. There have been court cases already where the black box “testified” against the driver. Big Brother is already watching.

Waxman is involved. It has little to do with safety and a lot to do with control. The little totalitarian will give me another reason never to buy a new car.

But wait! There’s more. Now that I think further on the possibilities for revenue, howabout the little tattletale rats you out when: you stay in the same parking space 30 seconds longer than you’ve paid the meter? When you don’t make a full, dead stop at a stop sign? Do more than 15.00 mph in a school zone? Idle your car engine for longer than the latest greenie decree allows? The prospects for nanny-staters are simply dizzying...

Taxed by the mile, track driving infractions, conduct "safety" checkpoints... and...

- Track gas mileage and institute a "surcharge" for anything above the federal "standard".
- Track locations frequented and match to data collected by census workers this year (GPS coordinates of most households).
- Ability to disable any of the vehicle's components remotely (cut off your engine if you exceed the national gas ration allowance, or if you travel within 2 miles of a Tea Party protest).

Just think of all the control that a president could have through the FBI, EPA, or an Executive Order...!
