THE tax on cigarettes will rise by 25 per cent from midnight as part of the Federal Government's crackdown on smoking.
The Government will also force tobacco companies to use plain packaging from July 1, 2012.
The changes will cut tobacco consumption by six per cent and the number of smokers by two or three per cent - about 87,000 Australians, the Government said.
The 25 per cent tax increase will mean an increase of about $2.16 for a pack of 30, raising the cost to about $17.95.

An example of the proposed plain packaged cigarettes.
Is that it?
Looks like the nanny state Rudd gubmint is paving the way for the creation of a black market of cigarettes. Think of it as Australia's Prohibition.
Do you see everything wrong with cigarette tax hikes?
Not as strange as it sounds. Rudd is Zeros adopted brother
Are you saying cigarettes DON’T cause lung cancer?
Yeah! And that’s the unforeseen consequence. Declining revenues. Smart!
My girlfriend I met at TAFE college was smoking when I met her and I convinced her to give up smoking for good.
25% ain’t nothing.
In this country the tax on loose tobacco rose 2200% since Obozo was elected.
The purpose of taxes is to punish people you don't like, isn't it?
We should coat the outside of every package with lye-spraying live killer bees who each have a switchblade knife, too.
Cigarettes do not cause lung cancer.
There is no dose-response relationship.
Not all smokers developt lung cancer, therefore cigarettes do not “cause” lung cancer.
But they sure as hell contribute to lung cancer and other diseases!
Phase III will be to herd nonconformists into camps where they will be reeducated or else gotten rid of. We have moved beyond sanity in the quest to force people to do what the government demands.
If there is any lesson history teaches us it is that this will end in killing. Leave people alone. Live your own life.
Yes, it gives the government more money to pay for needless, interfering programs/regulations and more money to bribe each other with to get more needless, interfering regulations.
They want the tax money but then they ......
What I see wrong with cigarette tax hikes is that they are used to punish only certain wrong-doers. Why not hike the taxes on alcohol? That might keep the kids in college from drinking themselves to death, right? Why not hike taxes on porn? That might keep pervs from turning to living out their fantasies in real life, right?
I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
Think of the Rudd gubmint as bloodsucking leeches, draining the lifeblood out of anyone Rudd or his cronies hate, to stroke their egos.
It's a tax on 'drug of choice' for one group - and only one group. Illegal drugs - liberal choices - aren't taxed whatsoever. They're sold on the black market - capitalism at it's purest...
Studies have shown people who yo-yo diet put their health at risk.
Another high-risk health group is gay men.
Would liberals put up with an extra tax on all things "gay" or on diet books? I don't think so...
have to laugh because these are invariably the same people who support letting you grow marijuana in pots on your veranda
(and it ain’t to make twine, no matter what Woody Harrelson claims)
Lemme get that trophy for you.
Truee now if they can get more teens to smoke think of all the tax money they can get.
