Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is speaking out against the new hard-line immigration law in Arizona, becoming the first prominent national Republican to do so.
"I think it creates unintended consequences," he said in a telephone interview with POLITICO Tuesday. "It's difficult for me to imagine how you're going to enforce this law. It places a significant burden on local law enforcement and you have civil liberties issues that are significant as well."
The measure, signed into law last Friday, would require police to check the immigration status of any individuals they reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants and arrest them if they can't prove legal status.
Bush said he understood the anger that prompted the bill, but that immigration should remain a federal issue.

The issue isn’t with the illegals. Its with US. How will they be sure we are not an alien unless we present a Birth Certificate? We don;t have a national I.D. card.
Just because you don’t speak with an accent and look like a European, isn’t proof you are not an alien invader.
“The issue isnt with the illegals. Its with US. How will they be sure we are not an alien unless we present a Birth Certificate? We don;t have a national I.D. card.”
Driver’s license, SS card, all that stuff you have to show EVERY day. Under the AZ law there is time given to produce
proof. Fake documents are easily determined. There also has to be a reason to stop and ask someone. They are NOT going to be bothering legal citizens.
I am really disappointed with Rubios position on this subject.
The vast majority of Cubans are here legally.

Which makes me wonder just how smart - or not - Rubio is.
Setting all merists and demerits of the issue aside, he could have done the “Arizonans will do as they see fit in their circumstances, but such an approach is not what we need our circumstances here in Florida.” Gets whatever he was seeking, but without thrusting his head into the woodchipper, as he has done here.
Clumsy. Not very adept at the weasel dance they must all perform, well or poorly. So two strikes against him, not just one. Still, I would vote for him over Crist if only to keep the patronage chewed up, set back and in turmoil.
People can get DL with green cards or maybe other resident alien IDs.
My state used to be loose as a goose about getting DLs but they tightened up when people got sick of illegals getting DLs, then driving without insurance and killing people.
Plus many people have noted that green card holders or other resident aliens legally are suppposed to carry papers showing their legal status, so people can carry those (and should) if they have them.
I am curious .... how can you tell that a person looking for work in, say, Phoenix is here “temporarily” if they don’t admit it first? What happens when a US citizen is asked to produce their green card? Is it enough for them to say “I was born here,” or did they have to present proof of birth or citizenship prior to this law being passed?
If I lived close to the boarder I would look like Pancho Villa - crossed ammoo bands around my chest and a shooting iron on each hip.
Then I would be living right next to YOU:)
I agree - like the Goldmann Sachs guys, there are some people who exist in a world high “above” the daily lives of the rest of us. They seem think in terms of vast movements of capital, men and arms that really only equate to mere numbers.
With folks like Lloyd Blankfein, those numbers are millions and billions of dollars; the fact that those numbers may actually be people’s pensions, or their homes, doesn’t really reach them. With the Bushes, it’s as if the concept of nations and nationalities don’t exist, either.
The rest of us exist on the micro level, while they are proud of that fact that they exist on the macro level, and make everything happen.
Bushes. America has suffered enough by their hand.
“The rest of us exist on the micro level, while they are proud of that fact that they exist on the macro level, and make everything happen.”
Quantum mechanics should trump everything.
PS. Besides working and volunteering it gets busy.
