Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.
Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans support the law along with 62% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Democratic voters are evenly divided on the measure.
At the same time, however, 58% of all voters are at least somewhat concerned that efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants will also end up violating the civil rights of some U.S. citizens. That figure includes 29% who are Very Concerned about possible civil rights violations.....

You do know that our state does this very thing and has for at least the past two years, right?
Here’s the text of the actual Arizona law in PDF format if anyone wants to read it. http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2R/bills/SB1070H.pdf
I don’t like the idea of police being able to walk up to anybody and demand, “Achtung! Your papers, please.”
On the other hand, if police DO have probable cause to stop somebody, it is reasonable that they be able to do this. E.g. if they see a bunch of people scrambling across the border, stealing from private property, intimidating ranchers, and so on. If Obama did his job as President (to protect the border) we would not be having this discussion.
Aint that the truth. Though I read an article this morning about a business owner facing forfeiture of his restaurant for hiring illegals. I'm not a big fan of forfeiture laws either, but a huge fine or the threat of jail time would do the trick a lot more effectively then this poorly thought out if will-intentioned law.
I have.
Of course we stop people from Alabama. We're not fools.
Arizona has chosen by its elected representation to submit to a process which is in fact carried out routinely for other suspicions, lane changing, open bottle, etc. And there were regularly roadblocks for DWI, License, etc.
We are being INVADED, how else can one put it?
If the Chinese Army, i.e. "illegal" invaders walked in enmasse and commandeered our schools and hospitals, but life still went on in some fashion for you and I, would we be complicit?
Of course there are many ways the federal Government could arrest the invasion, employers, border security, hospital reporting, etc. but it will not do it.
And it will not do it intentionally because Democrats want the votes!
How obvious is it?
Which can and does include DL and insurance inspections.
“Arizona has a problem and a right to act...but not if it trumps inherent rights.”
I'd suggest land mines and free fire zones.
“Of course we stop people from Alabama. We’re not fools.”
I was a Texas resident at the time.
100% of Undocumented Democrats opposed the measure...
60% opposed the Health Control Bill as well.
They have an agenda, the will of the people be damned.
Response: I agree and would add immediate arrest with deportation within an hour after booking.
I can’t really tell you the last time I got pulled over in Alabama strictly for a DL or insurance inspection. Although I’m sure it does happen. From what I read about how the statute is working out, most all of those arrested as illegals were cited for other, actual traffic offenses.
Sounds like you're a squish on enforcing the laws on illegal immigration.
Just how do you propose we enforce the law, if you think it's wrong for law enforcement officers to even ask people for proof of legal entry?
Has it occurred to you that if our country aggressively enforced our immigration laws, that in a very short time, no one would be stopped on suspicion of being illegally in this country?
I'm sorry, but illegal immigration is one of the worst problems this country faces. We're either going to get tough about it, or we're going to cease to exist as a sovereign nation.
We have been changing minds for the past year and a half. The figure used to be at 51%. These 31 % are hard core, not going to change.
“I cant really tell you the last time I got pulled over in Alabama strictly for a DL or insurance inspection.”
I’ve only hit one once. They closed down both sides of a highway.
“From what I read about how the statute is working out, most all of those arrested as illegals were cited for other, actual traffic offenses.”
That’s the other way to apprehend them, yes.
Yeah, I’m not sure how I feel about those and the DUI stops. I have a problem with that stuff also. At Camp Pendleton going up I-5 they have those illegal check stops and I’m not too crazy about those. I guess I have mixed feelings about this is the best way to characterize it.
The Post of The Day award!!!!!!!!!!
My husband says that we should send Obama to Arizona and let them verify his proof of citizenship. LOL!
“I guess I have mixed feelings about this is the best way to characterize it.”
I understand your point, but I’m not sure those check stops are actually illegal.
Nope, not me. I value being secure in my person and property and I want my citizen status to continue to be taken for granted by law enforcers. I don't vant to show you ze papers.
