Miss Me Yet? The Freedom Agenda After George W. Bush
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 04-24-10 | BARI WEISS

Posted on 04/23/2010 4:06:46 PM PDT by GOP_Lady

Dissidents in the world's most oppressive countries aren't feeling the love from President Obama.

No one seems to know precisely who is behind the "Miss Me Yet?" billboard—the cheeky one featuring a grinning George W. Bush that looks out over I-35 near Wyoming, Minn. But Syrian dissident Ahed Al-Hendi sympathizes with the thought.

In 2006, Mr. Hendi was browsing pro-democracy Web sites in a Damascus Internet café when plainclothes cops carrying automatic guns swooped in, cuffed him, and threw him into the trunk of a car. He spent over a month in prison, some of it alone in a 5-by-3 windowless basement cell where he listened to his friend being tortured in the one next door. Those screams, he says, were cold comfort—at least he knew his friend hadn't been killed.

Mr. Hendi was one of the lucky ones: He's now living in Maryland as a political refugee where he works for an organization called Cyberdissidents.org. And this past Monday, he joined other international dissidents at a conference sponsored by the Bush Institute at Southern Methodist University to discuss the way digital tools can be used to resist repressive regimes.

He also got to meet the 43rd president. In a private breakfast hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Bush, Mr. Hendi's message to the former president was simple: "We miss you." There have been "a lot of changes" under the current administration, he added, and not for the better.

Just A, remember that “unpopularpresidentbush” was his name to most of the so-called reporters who were ‘forced’ to cover him. Because they could not stand to look at or listen to him, they projected that dislike onto the American public, and did their best to keep him hidden from media view.

Unfortunately, I remember it all too well, maica.
Have I mentioned recently how much I LOATHE the Enemedia?

Now we are back to hearing Obama’s voice every half hour --

Not me! I do not listen to ANY of them anymore. When I occasionally have TV on I have to keep the remote next to me, as there are commercials with that fool droning on about 1 in 5 Americans...something about credit card interest rates or some such...OFF it goes.

Didn't President Bush say something one time about "turn the off button off?" ;*)

American conservatism champions private property, limited government, balanced budgets, fiscal prudence and avoidance of foreign entanglements.

That sounds more like LIBERTARIANISM than conservatism.
Where did you get that definition for conservatism?

My understanding has always been that conservatism champions strong social conservatism, fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense.

He failed to exercise or even show a desire to exercise any control over federal spending and the federal budget deficit.

You may want to check into that a bit more. Try HERE...HERE...and for just for fun, here.

CONgre$$ showed no desire to exercise any control over federal spending. Every year, except 2006 -- election year -- they added billions to his proposed budget.

After tripling the debt -- due to the terrorist attacks, hurricanes, a tsunami and waging the WOT -- he pledged to cut it in half within 5 years. Instead he cut it by 60% in 3 years and it was well on it's way to zero before the orchestrated attack on our financial system in September 2008, coupled with the rats stealing their way into the majority for his last 2 years and the blatant lies and constant cranking by not only the rats, but half of the pubs, as if they all had nothing to do with it.

Well that’s just darn funny; because most of my family and many others I know who voted for him never, EVER said anything about him attacking them! I think you’re full of it! I even had a couple of Democrats in my family who voted for him, and I haven’t heard a blessed thing even from them about him attacking them!

Besides, who gave you the right to decide how ‘conservatives’ are supposed to feel about him? Who made you the spokesperson of his supporters/voters in general? You put your own self in charge! But you’re not in charge of all conservatives or others; they themselves are! A lot of this stuff you’re spewing is flat nonsense!

I wonder sometimes at the power of the “mob” mentality and the draw that it has for so many. Scary actually to think about...

It is scary, especially to see it in action.

remind me of bush speeches specifcally castigating a republican congress for spending excesses, and threatening to veto excessive spending.

REMIND ME AGAIN WHEN HE FIRST DISCOVERED/USED THE VETO PEN! When again was his first veto of a budget, or major budgetary event bill?

Who signed the transportation bill which later became known as the bridge to nowhere bill (stevens-AL)?

I am not concerned with judging the last 2 years, even. Just talk to me about the first 6, (jeffords and all).

btw, in case you failed to read my prior comments and interpret correctly - Yes, I miss him as president, and knew I would from the time the 2008 candidates were known. The man gets no special passes on my ability to articulately express my opinion based on any of the above. anyone who lived and paid taxes in those years should be appalled at his behavior with the US budget deficit during that time.

I rarely have the tv on these days (what is the point of watching drivel and propaganda?), and keep the radio near the computer, so I can turn it off any time I hear the Dear Leader's voice.

You have a point about the media and I should’ve acknowleged that in my prior post. My prior post was made in frustration after witnessing Jug Ears being shown on Fox News twice, talking about two separate issues, within 90 seconds.

I know Pres. Bush always had the nation’s best interest at heart. I think he got and followed some terrible advice a few times. But his heart was in the right place, unlike the Kenyan.

What separates Libertarians from Conservatives is that they have no desire to defend the country against our foreign enemies, and we do.

You know, you can preach "conservatism" all you want, but if you don't have a strong leader who keeps you from getting slaughtered, like we had in President Bush, you won't be around to do anything anyway.

There is one critical difference between the Bush haters and us, Just a Nobody......WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN 9/11.

I would bet that some of these Bush bashers are also 9/11 truthers. I see very little difference between some of them, and guys like Michael Moore.

Their sole criteria for being a 'conservative' seems to be hating George W. Bush, and if you respect him, you're a liberal.

It's nonsense.

“i agree with your sentiments; I would like to offer one that bothered me greatly at the time - He failed to exercise or even show a desire to exercise any control over federal spending and the federal budget deficit.”

Very true.

This fact you posted, “You are correct — in 2008 alone the program cost 12% less than was originally estimated.” is astounding yet except for Paul Ryan I have nbever heard ONE other GOP Pol point this out
and every Dem alive from Politicians to MSM keep saying Bush created this huge undunded mandate, they say this to justify their runaway spending.

WE must counter the lies

“Well that’s just darn funny; because most of my family and many others I know who voted for him never, EVER said anything about him attacking them!”

Maybe they agreed with him on border security, that the Dubai Ports deal was a great idea, and that opposition to the appointment of his personal lawyer was rooted in sexism - or maybe they just didn’t pay attention to actual political issues.

“Besides, who gave you the right to decide how ‘conservatives’ are supposed to feel about him?”

Who gave it to you? You people (Bushbots) tell us we’re supposed to love the man, after all.

“A lot of this stuff you’re spewing is flat nonsense!”

Which is why you are a Republican, not a conservative. We judge people by their actions in office, not their “aura”.

Bush was a liberal President. He doubled the debt. He expanded government. He started this bailout and stimulus bill nonsense. He refused to do his duty and protect the Constitution (he signed McCain-Feignold while saying he KNEW it to be unconstitutional) and defend the territory of the United States.

A word about this one, dsutah. Among other ludicrous accusations spewing from his fingertips, this he has accused me of being like Cindy Sheehan.

In reality, he hates President Bush with a passion, doesn't support our troops in Iraq, and is far closer to a Cindy Sheehan/ Code Pink type than I am (other than the fact that I have a hero son).

I can say from painful experience, that he's best ignored.

“You forgot to add miserable on our borders.”

I meant that to be included under not defending US territory. ‘Bots always dismiss any criticism of Bush, but bringing up the term “border” allows them to dismiss us further as “single issue” people. (Of couse, that single issue is the “fate of the country”.)

“Bush turned out to be one of the worst leaders of this nation...enabling the rise to power of the worst.”

That, just possibly, was his job.

” this he has accused me of being like Cindy Sheehan.”

You did it again in this very post - trading on your son for political gain.

“In reality, he hates President Bush with a passion,”

I hate Bush’s liberal agenda with a passion.

“doesn’t support our troops in Iraq”

Nonsense. I don’t support nation-building.

” and is far closer to a Cindy Sheehan/ Code Pink type than I am (other than the fact that I have a hero son).”

LOL. You’re the True Beleiver in a politician. That places you in their camp.
