An assistant professor at the State University of New York in Cortland has been arrested in central New York on rape and sexual abuse charges.

Daniel DePerno of Cortland is accused of victimizing a teenage girl on several occasions since she was 13. The 39-year-old DePerno was arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree and third-degree rape, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child after a joint investigation by state troopers and SUNY Cortland police.

He was arraigned in the town of Cortlandville and ordered held on $250,000 cash bail.

A call to his lawyer wasn't immediately returned Friday. Police didn't say how old the girl is now.

SUNY Cortland is located between Syracuse and Binghamton. It was founded in 1848 and enrolls approximately 7,200 students.

Curious: what exactly does "second-degree and third-degree rape" mean? Was there some kind of plea bargain involved, or did he just not, ah, go all the way?

Still, a sicko.

Second and third degree rape are charged for things like "statutory rape." First degree involves forcible rape.

Probably the Professor admitted to having sex with the girl when she was under-aged but denied it was forcible. So the cops charged what they had the most evidence to convict on. After all, she either was or wasn't underaged.
