UPDATE 1-New US $100 note aims to deter counterfeiters

Wed Apr 21, 2010 2:39pm EDT

By David Lawder

WASHINGTON, April 21 (Reuters) - A newly designed $100 note aims to thwart counterfeiters with advanced security features, top U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve officials said on Wednesday.

The "new Benjamins" to be released in February 2011 retain the traditional look of the U.S. currency, with Benjamin Franklin's portrait. They aim to foil counterfeiters with difficult and costly to reproduce features such as a blue three-dimensional security ribbon with alternating images of bells and the number 100 that move and change as the viewing angle is tilted.

The new notes, which cost slightly more to produce, also feature a bell image inside a picture of an inkwell that changes from copper to green when tilted, as well as a large "100" that does the same.

"As with previous U.S. currency redesigns, this note incorporates the best technology available to ensure we're staying ahead of counterfeiters," U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said at a Treasury Department unveiling ceremony. "Welcome to the new Benjamins."

The $100 note is the most often counterfeited denomination of U.S. currency outside the United States due to its broad circulation overseas. It is the highest-denominated note issued by the Federal Reserve.

The approximately 6.5 billion older design $100s already in circulation will remain legal tender after the new notes are released next year.

Fear mongering, in a way. The actual percentage of American “dollars” that are coins or currency is like 3%.

The rest is tbills or bonds or Charmin or Wills and Trusts or Notes or Deferred Payments or 401(k)’S or WHATEVER THE HELL THE SHYSTERS CAN CON YOU IN TO!!!

If CONgress was even SLIGHTLY interested in balancing the budget I might be interested in worrying about whether my dollar was genuine.

Yeah, and who was the brilliant designer who came up with the idea to have "SPECIMEN" plastered over both sides?

Amount is small compared with total money supply. On the other hand, disruption in bill and coin circulation can severely impact day-to-day economic life of most citizens, creating serious social disruption and adding another layer of crisis of confidence over what we already have.

But in fact it’s not Mr. and Mrs. J6P who benefit by the “integrity” of the dollar.

It’s the beltway and wall street folks.

If the dollar were to completely collapse, my bet would be that withing a month or two, new models of trade would happen.

Some would die, fortunes would collapse, but the urge to survive and work would rule.

If you are talking about the final stage of financial meltdown, it is true that safeguarding dollar’s value matters little. I was addressing the problems in the interim.

Wasn't that the purpose for the last redesign?

“deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”
Where do they get their currently unjust powers?

N. Korea is a stinking crap overall but it is good at certain things along the line of terrorism and international criminal activities.

The regime is Secret Service's major headache.

Let’s see...

They unveiled the new 100$ Benjamins thus tipping their hand to the counterfeiters, but they won’t release any till Feb 2011.

Even after that they say they will honor the old ones.

If they continue to honor the old ones, then the anti-counterfeiting benefit is nil.

Plus they gave a more than adequate head start to the counterfeiters.

Plus the cost of printing the new ones goes up substantially.

But it gets better:

The Norks are nevertheless dumping their inventory of supernotes. US Dollars have dropped in value in nearby China to as low as 20% of the previous value.

This is in China where the falling dollar is already a huge worry.

With the dumping, of supernotes, it causes inflation that Obama can’t even spend!

The Norks get the immediate benefit and Obama only gets inflation, and in China where it really matters!

Hahahahahahha! Sorry but I just can’t help but laugh! The Dollar is a joke that just keeps going and going...

It's just you.

Not the worst I've ever seen world wide.

Although it might be the ugliest Federal Reserve Note ever...

I hope that they have a new $1000 note on the drawing board. We are going to need it soon with Obamaflation on the near horizon.

Won't happen.

The larger bills were killed by the drug war, as it made it too easy to transport money across the border.

With 0bama in charge they will want to keep honest citizens from taking their money with them.
