DES MOINES, Iowa -- Des Moines police said Tuesday that a woman scared off a burglar after he broke into her home.
Police said they were called to 1300 block of Idaho Street on a burglary in progress around 5:30 a.m. Officers said they found Nelson McAlpine, 36, standing in the front yard of the home. They said he matched the description of the burglar and was detained.
Officers went inside the home and met with the homeowner, Beatrice Turner, 89, who said that she heard and saw McAlpine punching her front door and putting a hole in it.
"He kicked this, he broke all this out. And then he kicked all this out. See, and all this here," said Turner.
Turner told police that she grabbed her 22 cal. pistol and confronted the burglar and then shot once at him once inside the home. The bullet did not hit McAlpine.
"After he start kicking the door, thats when I got my gun. And thats when he stood there. And thats when I fired my shot, you know. The Lord was with me, I never got scared," said Turner.
Turner told KCCI that she was aiming at McAlpine.
"The next thing I knew, he was in here. Right there. And thats when I grabbed my gun and I stood right there in my bedroom door with my gun and I said Im going to kill you!" said Turner. "I was trying to hit him in the head, but I guess my bullet missed him. But if it had cocked him again, Id have got him."
Turner told police that McAlpine quickly left the home.
"I must not have been a dang good shot, because I must have missed him!" said Turner. I think the Lord was watching over me."
McAlpine was charged with second-degree burglary. He's being held on $10,000 bond in the Polk County Jail.
"This is a .22. And the police reloaded it for me," said Turner. "I know how to work that gun. I just hope and pray to God it don't happen again."
Gotta love Iowa.
And, the cops showed Beatrice how to get off a second shot. She needs to run for mayor.
Absolutely hilarious. Looks like she's good to go if another degenerate comes breaking in.
Some Democrat somewhere is furious. This old guy better watch out or he could end up in the gulag.
Beatrice is a gal.
If I was that cop I’d not only give her a hug but I would invite her to the range and teach her how to shoot more accurately. I would also recommend she get a larger caliber weapon. If she couldn’t afford it I’d get all of my fellow cops to donate a few bucks to get her one. Maybe even have a private ceremony for her, give her a medal, and present her with a better firearm.
LOVE IT!
Oops.
She just needed a little more practice.
Still,I bet the robber needed clean undies!
What I can’t figure out, is why the guy was still standing in the front yard? Perhaps the police rolled up just as he was exiting the home.
The DM Red Star article I linked to explains it better. The guy was whacked out of his mind on drugs.
This lady is a prime example of why I’ve been against the effort to reduce the sales of the cheap Saturday-Night Special handguns. These were a great resource for women, especially poor single women needing to protect themselves.
This woman would have been beaten up, possibly raped... possibly killed. You never know these days. And the really great thing to hear, is that she wasn’t afraid with that gun in her hand.
Mission accomplished!
OIC, sounds about right. Thanks for the mention.
At this residence, a loaded shotgun with MANY pellets in the shell would have been the response.
Just beautiful!
My approach is several handguns within reach near every entry.
