The Problem With Palin
American Spectator ^ | April 19, 2010 | Quin Hillyer

Sarah Palin, 55 percent unfavorable poll ratings notwithstanding, is a political phenomenon the likes of which American public life rarely has seen. There's something distinctive, something deeply personal, about the way her legions of strong supporters rush not just to defend her but to counter-attack any and all of her critics. Palin has a way of establishing a sense of connectedness with her backers -- such a strong, attitudinal sense that she is not just like them but one of them -- that she has created what amounts to a one-woman, conservative "identity politics" writ very, very large.

Yet if conservatives are to continue a political love affair with this admirable and galvanizing woman, we need to insist on more than mere identity. And more than mere attitude.

We know that Sarah Palin shares our conservative values. But is she the leader conservatives need?

IN HER RECENTLY RELEASED memoir, Going Rogue, Palin tells a story about how she approached the first state budget she handled as governor. It sounds like something right out of the 1993 Kevin Kline movie, Dave, except that Palin's tale is fact instead of fiction.

We worked late into the night with the warm midnight sun still pouring through my office windows....Pens in hand, we combed through the budget, line by line, page by page -- my inner nerd coming out again, just like Wasilla City Council days....I had to know what was in there, or I wasn't doing my job. We spent days trying to decipher who put in what and why. Late one night, I looked up from the table and asked our veteran staffers, "What did past governors do? How did they get through these budgets with so little detail?" "They didn't," was the response.

"And what did Romney do?"

Is this thread about Romney? Have I ever touted Romney? Has Romney declared his candidacy?

"Palin actually did a bang up job cutting waste in Alaska and was an effective governor."

For half a term. Then she quit. What do you think the American voter will remember? When did Palin declare for the nomination?

I find it interesting how some individuals on the right are so quick to follow the msm. Obama had far less experience than Palin. George W. Bush had no more. There are others who have more experience but have demonstrated clear lack of wisdom. Look at Romney for example. He pushed through a horrible Health Care plan in Massachusetts and has offered only lukewarm support to the Tea Party movement. Politicians like him don’t want the little people thinking of themselves as equals, as sovereign citizens. Far too many Gopers see themselves just like the Dems do. They look at the people as if they are children to be manipulated and taken care of. This is why we must be so careful.

Palin is dangerous because she has shown a fearlessness to take on the establishment in the GOP, the media, and the President. She doesn’t accept their premises or apologize and retreat when they try to shout and ridicule her down. She is a Joan of Arc figure. The leftist media and the Democrats are scared of her even more so than they were of George W Bush. They are scared of her like they were of Reagan. She is not Reagan yet but she could be and if she keeps pushing and remains outspoken she not only can be President. She will be President.

Until you tell everyone who which potential candidate best reflects YOUR political philosophy while you disparge Sarah Palin, I am going to have to conclude that you are a SHILL for ROMNEY!

Now if you want to claim you are not here shilling for Romney, then tell us which potential candidate best reflects your political philosophy?

If you refuse, then we will all have to assume you are either shilling for Romney or trolling for Obama.

Are you really this childish? This is fifth grade girl logic. But, if that's what you've got, go with it.

Of course an adult would use my own words, not her own assumptions to define me.

Btw...citing Palin's own words and actions does not constitute disparagement.

As for your pinging Jim to this, what is your purpose?

I genuinely appreciate your post. It shows how low the liberals will go to defame and sully anyone who threatens their power.

The media and political class went after Sarah Palin unlike any politician in history. It was a disgusting display and nothing was out of bounds for them. I seriously believe that one of the reasons she was hated so much was that she had the audacity not to abort Trig.

I still respect her immensely, but when she quit the Governorship instead of fight back, it really changed my view of her. Why not use the bully pulpit that she had to bring these bastards filing lawsuits out into the open? Why not use her popularity and clout to turn the tables on them? Why not counter sue? I have a hard time believing that her only recourse was to resign. I wanted her to fight. I wanted her to stand up. I wanted her to weather the storm. I wanted her to shine a light on the bastards. But she didn't.

I think she is a great fundraiser and attack dog, and she can greatly help the cause by backing the most Conservative candidate, but, in my eyes, she is just too damaged to make a serious run for the Presidency.

Very good post.

Two things about Our Lady of Wasilla: 1) The fact that she is more qualified than Obama is really damning with faint praise. Being more qualified than Obama is meaningless - except that it proves the American people can be manipulated into electing unqualified Presidents. 2) I am becoming more convinced that she is OUR Obama. By that I mean, she connects with us on a visceral level, there is a symbolic character to her as a national candidate, the difference is that it's OUR symbols and the connection she has with us is because we are GOOD.

The facts that she is more qualified than Obama, and FReepers would fight each other to drink her bath water are not qualifications for the Presidency.

Which known politician is more qualified to be president than Sarah Palin? Who would you like to see heading the 2012 ticket? McCain? Romney? Huckabee? Paul?

You make this a thinking forum, rather than us all following what the circus director tells us to do, as unthinking, obedient, complicit elephants. Been there. Done that.

This Sarah/Obama comparison is getting old.

The problem with Obama isn't that he isn't qualified. The problem with Obama isn't that he is a symbol who connects at a visceral level. The problem with Obama is that he is a anti-American MARXIST!

And of course Sarah isn't.

I think Sarah is well qualified enough where I may support her for the nomination. What specific qualifications (and I do mean specific), do you think Palin is lacking?

Re: your tagline.

I think they will sacrifice "Obama" to start their Red Terror.

He has gotten them all they wanted, and more. He's near his sell-by date. And the strength of the patriot movement is growing.

Look at JFK. Even Jackie, before she got with the program, knew he was killed by a "silly little communist".

And yet, MSM power was so strong that the majority of people blamed "extremism", particularly the Barry Goldwater kind.

They did it once, they can do it again.

And the clock is running on their great adventure. It will be soon.

Two things about Our Lady of Wasilla:

I also seem to sense a certain morphing of the increasingly lemming-like attitude toward Governor Palin on Free Republic akin to the attitude of the Bushbot crowd here

So anyone who does not just agree 100% with your personal opinions has a "lemming like mindset akin to the Bushbots" and are worshiping at the shrine of "Our lady of Wasilla"

Love the way the self proclaimed "superior intellects" around here cannot post a simple rational defense of their views but instead continually engage in the standard Alinsky tactic of diversion and personal attack. You two whine non stop about "personal attacks" from the "Palin bots' yet none of you ever post anything but emotion driven, blie laced personal attacks. You then turn around and complain when people respond to your bile in kind! There is no substance to your posts at all. It boils down to you proclaiming to the supposedly mindless Palin drones "I am such a great open mind thinker and all you who disagree with my opinions are mindless lemmings."

Utterly hypocritical for you two to then get all outraged when people respond in kind to your standard choice in debate tactics.

You both suffer from a serious case of emotion projection.

If you two are such "great thinkers" how about you try post a fact based rational argument for your views.

But then neither of you is capable of that. Take away your habitual reliance on the twin logical fallacies of stating your opinions as if they were facts and Ad Homine personal attacks, and neither of you have anything to post.

That is an admirable recitation — though far too much of it is anecdotal and highly questionable, and it short shifts such travesties as the push for illegal immigrants, the prescription drug takeover, and the No Child Left Behind travesty (among other transgressions).

By the way, perhaps you didn’t realize that it is possible to disagree with your fellow conservatives without resorting to personal attacks and bitter invective. You might want to review Ronald Reagan’s 70% formula.

Oh, for pity sake, now you're moving to the border? So you consider the billions of dollars he increased the enforcement budget, the thousands of additional agents, the fence, the ICE raids, the massive deportations and convictions "missed opportunities"?

Funny how its taken over a year for Obama to rollback and undo everything Bush accomplished with those "missed opportunities".

The Left launched an 8 year campaign to demonize him to their base, while convincing the Right he wasn't conservative enough. Boy did they win that one. At least do a little research before joining the misinformation parade.

I am not sure what form it is coming, I am only sure that it is in fact coming. I heard several talk show hosts just yesterday talk about this fact. It is amazing how open people are to the D.C. authorities pulling a kind of Reichstag Fire as a way to stamp out all opposition to their agenda, and also seize (more than likely) privately held weaponry by the citizens.

Thank you for proving my point.

If the Palin doubters want to be taken seriously on this issue they need to start living up to their own self proclaimed standards.

Pretty hypocritical for them to demand a posting standard for everyone that they regularly demonstrate they are incapable of living up to themselves.

We don’t need anyone that has any of the kind of negative experience one would get in congress.

The deal making, compromising nature of congress is our biggest problem, and many of the worst presidents of my lifetime were senators: LBJ, Nixon, and Obama. All three of those presidents advanced socialism as their main goal throughout their terms in office.

We need mostly business experience; specifically small business experience where bad decisions are paid for by the decision maker, not by patrons or stock holders. Its called responsibility.

You have a strange idea of what is logical; everything about legislating is autocratic in nature. Just look at how both parties support exempting congress from its own product. Who else can set their own salary without consequence? These are the people that we need to keep away from the White House.
