You would think they would test these patches better before releasing them.

Read the article.

As the number of reports grew, Microsoft first stopped automatically serving the MS10-015 update, then confirmed that a rootkit caused the crashes. Only PCs that had been previously infected with the Alureon rootkit were incapacitated, Microsoft's investigation found.

The problem was caused by an infection already on their computer, NOT by a Windows update error.

If you use McAfee, you can sleep at night knowning you're in good hands.

I'm on DSL and the only time my computer shuts down (re-boots) is for upgrades.

Anyway, I'm happy - it keeps me out of trouble.

DOS??

People still use DOS?

I still use DOS all the time - Either a hacked up version of MS-DOS 7.10... Or a REALLY hacked down version of Win98SE that no longer has "Windows", unless one wants to start Progman... I tend to use this more than DOS anymore in order to get at 32bit and much better mem... But it is basically a 32bit DOS... It is still the best thing for low level hardware diagnostics, HDD work, and real-time functions (machine tools). One can often get onto NT Systems that NT can no longer read with simple DOS and an NTFS driver.

I was kidding. But there are no doubt a few nutjobs somewhere who still use it.

I used it last week to clean up the C: drive on an XP machine. I could get to a lot more than Windows would allow me to get to.

You might try doing a System Restore to the last best system state while in Safe Mode.

==

I use a program called CloneGenius to image my OS partition. It has saved me several times. It takes about 35 minutes to image my 28 Gb OS partition, and about the same amount of time to restore, should I need to (which I did need just last week). And, by using it, I don’t have to reset all of my configurations or install all my programs (just any new ones since the last image files were created).

I recommend checking it or a similar imaging program (there are several available).

...who are going to check in with your annoying "Buy a Mac" and "I use linux" remarks..

I want one of those weird unrealistic operating systems they have on TV and movies that show all sorts of wild virtual reality graphics to show just how far hackers have invaded your system...

I have a few DOS programs that I use occasionally in the DOS window in XP.

I also have some maintenence programs (DOS and file management) that run from the 3.5 floppy, if I have a severe Windows problem.

DOS isn’t dead, although I hear it won’t run in Win7, but there is an add-on program to emulate a DOS window.

They do, but you can’t test everything. I’ve been in QA for 15 years and “test on virus infected machine” has never appeared in any of my test plans.

Pre-emptive strike: Screw all of you smart-asses who are going to check in with your annoying "Buy a Mac" and "I use linux" remarks...

Sorry, you don't get to screw us just because Microsoft pre-emptively screwed you.

[...] although I hear it won’t run in Win7 [...]

Well, Dos itself won't run... but most of my library of tools survived the jump to Win7 32bit... Those that made it past WinXP sp-3 anyway... Although one must operate with UAC turned off (fine by me).

The same cannot be said for the tools I have authored myself - My own stuff, mostly 16/32bit console stuff must be rewritten. : ( I JUST did that to get by SP-2 changes it seems...

It is Win7 64bit that drops the ax. no 16bit .com executable will run on it. Pretty well limited to 32/64 bit console apps...

And 32bit is certainly going away. with 64bit laptops and consumer desktops being so cheap for most of last fall and winter, about half of what I am seeing cross my bench are now 64bit systems.

Just a little piece of advice to all from someone with 26 years in the biz.

Never, ever set your Windows updates to automatic. Make sure it “asks” you first. Then....say no for a while. Let ‘em percolate for a while. Go slow on accepting updates.

I’ve seen this far too many times with Microsoft over the years. It’s the same reason I never buy version 1.0 of any new Microsoft OS.

7 has the same fake DOS command prompt that’s in XP.

Funny, but here we are six hour into the thread, and there aren't any of the comments you mentioned.

Just one snarky comment from you, and one reply to by someone else to your snarky comment.

Seems like someone one this thread is a bit defensive. I guess using MS-Windows makes some folks like that.

How did you get to “system restore” through the blue screen?

Yeah, I'm looking for all those vile insults from Mac users to Windows users that driftdiver claims infest Windows threads that justify his behavior in Mac threads... have you seen any???

The blue screen isn’t always immediate. Sometimes I have to reboot manually and when I do it asks me if I want to re-start windows normally.
