Gates was one of the good guys for sure, I had a chance to speak with him as the riots were in full swing.

Off mic, he did not pull any punches, nothing PC about him!

R.I.P.

Wasn’t he the guy that handed out concealed weapons permits only to celebrities and rich businessmen, and when called on it, basically said their lives were more valuable than all the rest of us peons?

From wikipedia:

In a PBS interview, when asked whether the local people in the minority areas expressed thanks to the police for their actions, he responded:

"Sure. The good people did all the time. But the community activists? No. Absolutely not. We were out there oppressing whatever the community had to be, whether it was blacks, or Hispanics. We were oppressing them. Nonsense. We're out there trying to save their communities, trying to upgrade the quality of life of people..."

Boy! We don’t have many like him (if any) but we sure could use them now. Sorry to hear of his death. I wouldn’t have believed he was 83. He had what it took to get the job done.

I followed his career and read his book years ago and truly had sympathy for the troubles he had trying to get his son back on track. I don’t think there was a phony bone in his body. We need more straight shooters!!!!!!

The scapegoat for the LA riots.

Yeah, right after Bradly got on TV and basically started it, inflamed it, and then justified it.

Do you have a citation for that?

After seeing his officers face LS’s biggest POS’s with all types of weaponry Each and EVERY day I am inclined to give Chief Gates and Officers like him the benefit of the doubt. While I will NEVER agree w/ him on RKBA I don’t think that was a vindictive and bad bone in his body.

....and I think it was worse that he instigated the Sanctuary City policy that has led to 200000 illegal gang members in LA!
He did do a good tactilcal job on crime and specialized units to fight the thugs, but he was gradually on board with the PC demands of the racial activists...

RIP

Did somebody say community activist?
