WASHINGTON -- After hounding Major League Baseball and its players union over steroids, Congress now wants the sport to ban smokeless tobacco.
"Good luck," San Francisco Giants reliever Brandon Medders said. "Guys do what they do. We work outside. It's been part of the game for 100 years."
At a hearing Wednesday, House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Henry Waxman, a California Democrat, and Health Subcommittee chairman Frank Pallone, a New Jersey Democrat, called on baseball and its players to agree to bar major leaguers from using chew, dip or similar products during games.

Can't they just focus on leaving us the HELL alone!? They are pushing their agenda TOO far and they will soon tick off the "wrong" people...
Nice job with your first post!
I am pretty anti tobacco so I wish players wouldn’t use it out in the open. Many don’t as they don’t want to set a bad example. Congress however has NO business getting involved in something that is totally legal.
Oh, BTW... welcome to Free Republic.
I was under the impression that tobacco use was pretty much non existent in baseball these days.
Isn’t it nice that we have A$$ Clowns like Waxman to manage every aspect of our lives?
really?
This is really an issue to concern the federal government?
Congrats. The problem is that they view their jobs as social engineers. They really think they are our new Lords and Masters who need to direct the “little people”.
No. Sunflower seeds!
A 2 x 4 would solve alot of Ratman’s...errrr, Waxman’s mental problems.....
“Good luck,” San Francisco Giants reliever Brandon Medders said. “Guys do what they do. We work outside. It’s been part of the game for 100 years.”
...and Americans have been “doing what they want” for over 200 years...until recently...
“Good luck,” San Francisco Giants reliever Brandon Medders said. “Guys do what they do. We work outside. It’s been part of the game for 100 years.”
Good luck with that attitude. Congress will damn well do what it pleases and ten bucks says they will use the bad message it sends to kids as the wedge.
Good for Him! Basically, he's telling Waxman and the rest of congress to pass any law they want but players will continue to do as they please. I wish more Americans had that much courage.
I suppose that also rules out the victory cigar.
Or a 34-ounce Louisville Slugger!
They’ll have to go after sunflower seeds and bubble gum too. After all those things could lead impressionable children (congressmen) to believe they’re chewing tobacco.
Congress, mind your own business!
Whew! I am SO glad Congress has solved all of our pesky little issues and can now tackle the REALLY important things such as snuff. Hopefully they will begin cracking down on the excessive amount of butt-scratching in baseball, too. /s
Welcome to FR, by the way. Good job with your first thread!
