ABC News: Vladimir Putin to head investigation into Polish president's death

Russia says Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will personally head the investigation into an aeroplane crash that killed Poland's president.

A total of 96 people were on board the plane that crashed near the western Russian city of Smolensk, all of whom are believed to be dead.

Polish president Lech Kaczynski was on board the Russian-built Tupolev 154 jet when it went down in heavy fog near a military airport.

Russian authorities have already said they suspect pilot error in the crash, near Smolensk, in Western Russia.

There are reports the jet made several attempted landings before the crash.

Also on board were leading members of Poland's political elite, including the army chief of staff and the governor of the central bank.

A scan of a list of 88 passengers aboard the plane published on a Polish government website showed the names of Poland's chief of staff, General Franciszek Gagor, and Major General Bronislaw, head of operational forces.

General Tadeusz Buk, head of land forces, air force commander Andrzej Blasik and special forces chief Wojciech Potasinki, as well as navy vice-admiral Andrzej Karweta, were also on the list.

They were part of an official delegation travelling to commemorate the massacre of thousands of Polish soldiers by soviet troops during the second world war.

Even Putin isn’t that brazen to kill the Polish President in his own backyard.

...and you know that how?

Correction, Putin overseeing the investigation is the SECOND item, the first being the report that ALL of the mobile phones of the deceased passengers were found to be not working.

Vladimir Putin to head investigation into Polish president's death

Terrific! Now we'll get to the bottom of it! (yeah, right)

KGB Putin is still looking into who poisoned the president of the Ukraine several years ago. Also who murdered scores of reporters critical of him.

I recently saw a movie where a serial murderer carried around a tank of compressed air that powered a device used to slaughter cattle.

The device left a nice perfectly round hole in the dead animal/person’s skull

If autopsy reports are to believed, it seems likely that such a device was used to slaughter Ron Brown.

He was brazen enough to poison the President of Ukraine. He was brazen enough to kill off journalists left and right. Believe me - he is brazen enough to do anything. There is nothing for him to fear right now with Hussein in office. Expect more stories like this.

Very interesting!

Very sad news. Will President Obama attend? Would given the media another chance to associate his name with the word historic.

OMG! Where is that report? I missed it. Just woke up to this news and trying to catch up with a heavy heart and a strong cup of coffee.

That’s a very interesting and possible explanation for the inward-bevelled hole in his head that was allegedly found.

Even Putin isn’t that brazen to kill the Polish President in his own backyard. Give the guy some credit.

Yeah, he might get a nastily worded letter from the State Department and risk a paper cut.

And what can be made of this?

“According to reports, the pilot accelerated as the plane came in to land and at that point lost contact with air traffic control.”

Why would the pilot accelerate when he knew he was in dense fog and wasn’t quite sure where the runway was?

Heavy fog... That's a dangerous time to fly. I don't think this is anything but an accident at this time. But if Russia use any turmoil in Poland to move.... well... there are poles all over the world.

We must help. We have to be like the Jews, NEVER AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN should we stand back and let Poland be invaded. I don't know what the legality of it is , but I would hope that if the USA does nothing... something like the Rough Riders can return.

... and, although Putin was not in leadership position at time, the KGB was also behind Pope John Paul assassination attempt in 1981.

Never forget, never trust the Russians.
