Bravery isn't the first word that comes to mind when looking at these images of a Japanese log-rolling ceremony.

But that is exactly what these young men are apparently proving during the bizarre Ki-otoshi ceremony, where they ride the giant logs as they are yanked down steep hills by ropes.

Skidding and bumping over the rough terrain, at times the logs literally drop down the steep inclines

Bravery is when you ride a giant log downhill to rescue Olive Oyl at the bottom.

Stupidity is when you ride one just because your buddies do.

Ahhh, our culture has lost so much, what with the young people not knowing how our loggers used to have contests “rolling logs”, or better known as log rolling. Two loggers got on a log, in the mill pond, and used the spikes on their boots to manipulate the log, attempting to knock the other guy into the water. It was dangerous and done for fun. Other loggers used to have to free up log jams on the rivers, risking their lives for a paycheck. The Japanese have nothing on Americans, except our guys did it for a living and they do it because the Saki takes hold!

“What rolls down stairs alone or in pairs
Rolls over your neighbor’s dog?
What’s great for a snack and fits on your back?
It’s Log, Log, Log!

It’s Log, Log, it’s big, it’s heavy, it’s wood.
It’s Log, Log, it’s better than bad, it’s good!
Everyone wants a log! You’re gonna love it, Log!
Come on and get your log! Everyone needs a Log!”
