WASHINGTON—Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens announced Friday he will retire from the court this summer.

Justice Stevens, 89 years old, said in a letter to the White House that he will step down when the high court takes its summer break.

"Having concluded that it would be in the best interests of the court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the court's next term, I shall retire from regular active service as an associate justice...effective the next day after the court rises for the summer recess this year," Justice Stevens wrote.

Did Bahney say he's going?

Did he get a gig on Comedy Central or something?

The only good news about this is that it will put pressure on Obama to pick a less-loony leftist to replace Stevens. Otherwise, far more of the Senate will shift to the GOP than would otherwise occur.

It’s April, elections are November 2. Can we stall any confirmation until after the elections?

It’s not the fact that Ubanga will appoint somebody who is as big an America-hating socialist scumbag as Stevens that bothers me... it’s that the new scumbag will be much younger.

Thanks for all the damage you’ve done to our great country, Mr. Stevens. We can’t thank you enough for your decisions while misrepresenting your views, then hiding behind lifetime tenure

Oh and thanks for retiring too. Now. Your timing is impeccable.

What a Justice, what an American.

Yeah, garbage out garbage in...he wants to go before a new Senate is seated of course. GOP, if it has the potential to take over the senate, should hold up the appointment process till after November. The bum in the white house of course could to a recess appointment I guess but they can then push him out when the time comes. That would be the best chance to get someone on the bench who is not a flaming lefty...no hope of course for anyone right of center or even center but we must not allow a wide eyed lefty to be seated.

“but we must not allow a wide eyed lefty to be seated.”

You mean another one, right? I would put Sotomayer in that category.

My early prediction is that the demsm with help from the republicans, will find a way to get another lib in this slot. I just hope it’s not a young one.

A lot of Republican justices become liberals, but I can’t think of any Democrat justices who become conservatives. Why is that?

Not unless you also flip and control the Senate, they are tried in the Senate.

Look for Ginsberg to go next, she’s and her husband have multiple health issues. This will give BO 2 hard core left young people choices to make, who will be there for 2-3 decades.

Pray that Obama picks another very old Judge with an illness that shortens their life by decades... or that he picks a closet conservative or someone who “grows” into a conservative while there fairly quickly.

I often wonder that myself.

It would seem the odds would eventually favor the left making a bad pick that turns out to be more conservative than they hoped.

I can only assume that eagerness to kill babies fixes their moral compass in a leftward direction.
