Glenn Beck and radio pals Pat Gray and Stu Burguiere rattled down the list of potential Republican nominees for President in 2012 this morning, and they had some bad news for the Tea Party movement: Sarah Palin probably wont run, Ron Paul is still and long shot, and Mitt Romney, as of now, is the GOPs best bet.
While Gray and Burguiere are harsh to most of the candidates, Beck spreads the love around. He tells his co-hosts that he likes Palin but doesnt think she will run, Bobby Jindal but doesnt think he has the charisma, and Congressman Paul but doesnt think America is ready for him. Then, at the bottom of the pile, he finds Mitt Romney:
"I have to tell you that Mitt Romney could be the only guy that could win, and I dont know if he could because I think that Americans are going to be I mean, this country is going to be in deep trouble by 2012, and the next term, if its not decided this term, the next term will decide our fate. Then I hope that Americans are ready for an adult and are ready for hard news."
Its a strange, possibly sad conclusion from someone who had called Romney out for flirting with socialism, but ultimately Beck was trying to determine who could win, not who he thought should. If Beck was playing process of elimination, which he clearly was, its hard to refute his conclusion that Romney is the least likely candidate to crash and burn in a general election, if only for being a conservative from the most liberal state of America and having moderate successes like universal health care under his belt. Or and this one is for you conspiracy theorists out there maybe Beck is intentionally downplaying the Republican candidates ability to success so as to clear the brush and become the reluctant right-wing candidate by default. After all, he is the second-most popular human being in America. (Link to a Harris poll: Glenn Beck is the second most popular television personality in America second only to Oprah Winfrey.)
Listen to the segment below:
I haven’t seen any signs that Mitt is cleaning up his act. I still don’t trust his plastic principles.
I guarantee that Beck will become more (not less) supportive of Romney as time goes on.
He has to, it’s part of his faith. Romney is LDS ‘royalty’ and Beck is a ‘lowly convert’. The LDS but ‘the Chruch’ (not Christ) before EVERYTHING.
Been there, done that.
Dont watch Beck - so does he consider himself a conservative?

I think he considers himself conservative, but in principle he is much more of a libertarian.
MrR would know more than I on this one.
Ron Paul is not, and never has been a real candidate, so that reinforces my point.
Beck dismissed Palin and then went to the “adult’ with the “hard news”, Mitt Romney.
Beck pushed Mitt as though there were no other people in the GOP, including a couple of frontrunners that sometimes beat and always challenge Romney in various polls as they move around in the top three.
Mittens couldnt beat Juan McAmnesty back in 08. Beck is all wet here.

I would bet that Beck believes that Romeny winning the nom would be the ‘will of God’ and fulfillment of LDS prophecy.
Not kidding.
“Hey, people, at this point I only see Romney making a serious effort. Is anyone else going to try?”
It doesn’t matter how hard he tries. He won’t be nominated and if Beck doesn’t know this, he is CLUELESS.
Furthermore, he does not know whether Palin will run. All the signs point to her being a candidate.
He spent three minutes (of the five minute clip) talking about Newt and Jindal, neither of whom is serious. He spent 13 seconds on Palin concluding, based on nothing, that Sarah Palin did not want to be President. Then he concludes (again based on nothing) that Mitt Romney may be the only one who could win. I never listen to him because I think he is a loon and a friend of the pompous O’Reilly. If I listen to any of them, it i limited to Rush and Levin, who have original thoughts and back their positions up with facts.
Beck flunks on both counts.
You keep throwing his name out there and we conservatives keep pointing out that he is not conservative.
Would you come to that same conclusion if they were both evangelicals? That’s a rhetorical question of course.
I forgot. He also spent more time talking about Ron Paul and how much he agrees with him. LOL
In November of this year's election, we have here in Illinois, the most liberal candidate ever as the republican nominee, he makes Romney look down right conservative. I will never vote for either of them.
Pretty much all of them. And I see you are allowing some flexibility and being a little more polite with other posters who feel the same way I do. You wouldn't be holding some grudge or something, would you? ;-)
It's embarrassing to be called out on a claim you can't back up, isn't it?
It must be. You would know. Is that why you act the way you do?
She already has 80,000 Team Sarah members ready to take to the streets and 1.5 million Facebook fans. She could raise $100MM very quickly.
Her strongest ad can be clips from the 2008 campaign - all the bad things she predicted Obama will do that he will have done by 2008.
If Beck is a believer in his own religion, he believes that he will be god of his own planet some day.
One or the other, that's for sure :-)
She sure would! I don’t doubt but that Jindal’s a decent guy, but he would belong in Palin’s cabinet, not being propped up by her. If he’s not interested in that, he could switch over to the US Senate when he wants something new—and be a fine Senator.
And don’t buy into Palin’s somehow being stupid, thus needing the ‘brilliant’ running mate to make up for her weak intellect.
I disagree with Beck.
Romney would never appeal to the tea party, hence he couldn’t win the nomination.
If the Republican Party forced Romney upon us, much like it did with McCain, I guarantee there would be a Major Third Party candidate, and the relegating of the Republican Party to being even more insignificant.
hey! me too! LOL.
Oh wait, it already is...well, THAT was easy.
