Disappointment as US high school students snub 'lesbian-friendly prom'

Senior prom fell far short of the rite of passage Constance McMillen was hoping for when she began a legal battle to challenge a ban on same-sex dates.

The 18-year-old lesbian student said that she was one of only seven students to show up at a private party chaperoned by school officials. She said the rest of her peers went to another private event where she wasn't invited.

"It was not the prom I imagined," she said. "It really hurts my feelings. These are still people who I've gone through school with, even teachers who loved me before this all started. I've never been a bad student and I don't feel like I deserve to be put through this."

Her case drew a national spotlight after she and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged an Itawamba County School District rule that banned same-sex prom dates and a requirement that only male students wear tuxedos. Proms are parties held for students, generally in their senior year in high school.

The ACLU sent a demand letter to Superintendent Teresa McNeece in February, saying the rules against same-sex prom dates and girls wearing tuxedos violated Miss McMillen's constitutional rights. The district responded by withdrawing its sponsorship and cancelling the April 2 event.

In an apparent compromise, school district officials said parents would organise a private event with school chaperones that Miss McMillen could attend.

Given her conduct it was a fair projection that she would not abide by them.

OK — we know why they didn’t invite this particular girl. What about the other six?

I can't tell from the article if the others were invited to the other party or not - so you are making an assumption that may not be warranted. It may be that the others chose to go the "official" party to support Constance.

Before you get upset about the others "ostracizing" the other students, wouldn't you need to know who the students were and why the went to one party and not the other? Otherwise, you venture pretty close to liberal territory, accusing the other students of a "thought crime" because of an outcome you seem to disagree with.

>> Your position falls very much before God.

You overestimate your ability to speak for the Almighty. But, if I’m wrong — which I don’t think I am, but I have been before — then thank God for Grace to clean up the mess.

I think that's exactly what's rubbing most posters on this thread the wrong way about this. self esteem damage from "ostracization" and lack of christian charity accusations are the province of the libs.

I speak for the sound preaching I have heard and the scripture I have listened and read through several times. Unless that is wrong, you are wrong. And you need to check for ulterior motives.

Thought crime? I didn’t object to thoughts ... I objected to the outcome directly and explicitly.

Yes, it is liberal territory. After much pressing, Snakey has reduced his position to the statement that he would have only wanted Constance to be invited “if she comes with a male escort” to the private party. This kind of thought should have been given before Snakey made the first comment.

Whether those choices are morally right is a different question than whether they are within our legal right.

I fail to see how their desire to avoid a selfish, cross-dressing lesbian is morally wrong. Better to pluck out your eye than have it offend you, right?

Christians are often called to treat people better than they deserve to be treated.

Yes, but there's also something in there about asking for forgiveness and "go and sin no more." The Bible is quite clear on the status of homosexuality, it's not a quiet cult secret.

She just wanted to be an attention whore, and instead of being enablers by giving her the attention, they went somewhere else. Probably the best thing for her. Maybe she'll wise up, lose a few pounds, and settle down with some nice Christian guy and raise a family.

It takes quite an obnoxious ass to take a cheap-shot at someone and not even ping them on the post. I doubt you’d speak so boldly to my face.

I see no need to continue this conversation further.

And, what are the odds that Constance would have been just as snooty or tried to ACLU-wedge herself into the private party or just showed up there in drag? That the gesture would have been lost?

At some point the student body has to think of all the individual people in it, not just Constance.

And when she shows up wearing her tux, with her female date, and a bunch of cameras, what are the kids at the “private” party going to do then?

Trying to force yourself on others always ends in disappointment, why is this a national story? She tried to force herself on a group that whether she liked it or not, did not want to deal with her nonsense... She paid the price, so be it. Even those who may have been sympathetic to her she likely alienated with her pointless drama.

She ruins their regular prom, runs to the courts and then expects the folks she just jilted to run to her with open arms? Please.

Tolerance and acceptance are completely different concepts, and when you attempt to force acceptance of your abhorant behaviors on those who are willing to tolerate them, you are going to learn a harsh lesson every time.

I love the fact that this time she says “if they didn’t want me there I wasn’t going” but previously when faced with the same exact decision she takes it to the courts.

Sweetie your 15 minutes of fame are over, and sadly they have been for an absolutely idiotic reason.

Where are this girls parents? Seriously, why didn’t they sit her down and teach her just the basics of human interaction? She is defining herself by her actions and then trying to force those arround her to accept those actions as normal... and rather allowing interpersonal relationships at an individual level dictate her acceptance, demans the courts push it on others. This is nothing but a recipe for disaster and utter stupidity.

The real issue with this girl was not she wanted to go with her girlfriend, it was because one of them wanted to wear a tux, if they really wanted to just be at the dance, they could have quietly bought tickets and gone. This is and always was created pointless drama.
