I believe they are increasing.

If you compare this decade to the 50’s or the 60’s, yes, you could probably say they are decreasing.
If you compare it to the 70’s-90’s, you would say it is increasing.

We do not have enough history in terms of geological time frames to be certain.

But with the exception of Alaska, we are seeing large or even great quakes on all the primary zones that historically have produced massive, killer quakes.

Personally, I don’t think Chile’s done yet!

Einstein bought into it and believed in the feasabililty of it causing a pole shift.

Just because it's on the Internet doesn't make it so.

Now... the earth's ~magnetic~ poles do shift, and have done so many times already. No gravity "planes" needed.

No there isn’t. There is no evidence that anything unusual is going on. People like to say that when there have been a bunch of high profile events - on any given subject. All of a sudden “something must be going on”

This is simply not true and there is nothing to indicate that anything unusual is going on.

These quakes have been in areas that are prone to earthquakes.

This is the nature of earth. Earthquakes are part of the natural process.

Yes, that’s pretty much correct. The deeper it is, the less likely it is to cause a tsunami. And the deeper it is, the more the released energy from the quake is spread out. Instead of a small area having absolute destruction, a large area receives moderate damage. More people feel it, but not as badly.

The bad thing though, is that large earthquakes can cause more large earthquakes farther along on the fault/plate boundary/etc. And they can wake up dormant volcanoes. I think it’s very possible that the Baja California Easter quake was triggered in part by the Chile 8.8 quake earlier this year.

Well, of course you can believe anything you like.

But - believing something doesn’t make it true.

Up on a hill, overlooking the ocean, east coast, Queensland. Nothing happening.

Thanks for the ping.

Not to be a pain, but is that mean, median, or mode? And since when was a 33% difference “statistically insignificant.” Then again, to make your point, no one said those 18 quaked had to be evenly spaced...

Actually the scientific basis for the 2012 theory is that earth is entering the gravitational plane created by the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

I'd like to know how the Aztecs/Mayans knew it was coming. "Old Knowledge" perhaps? If that's the case, what will survive the next one? All of our information is on discs, and memory sticks; and we thought hieroglyphs were hard to read.....

Gorbal Warming ...

Believe it or not, they've actually tried to link earthquakes to gore-bull warming, or at least the severity of them. They claim rising sea levels due to melting ice caps exert additional pressure on the oceanic plates thereby making the movements between them more violent.

It could be the Sun’s fault. About a year or so ago scientists found a link between solar activity and EQs that occur on Earth.

But NASA could be full of absolute scientific nonsense, too.

We were in Northern Thailand, well away from the beach on that day. It was all very sad. I'm sure that people I talked to on one or another trip to Phuket were killed that day. I hope this hasn't any such waves, at least the warnings should be better though small villages are still in danger.

We will be in Krabi next weekend. I hope!!

I have no trouble believing that earthquakes might “cluster up” at various points in history. Some of the most catastrophic movements of the plates may have even happened over (relatively) short periods of time in big “jumps” rather than always being a slow creep. It’s as possible as anything else, I think.

Big quakes happen all the time.

We've got the internet and 24 hour news all the time these days. Things we wouldn't hear about for hours or days are reported in minutes.

Quantum physics is my hobby, and it's true. Einstein predicted a complete polar shift. The earth will turn over on it's side, according to him, any time now. If I remember correctly from one of my many books, the targeted start date was about 1989(?)or 1998(?).

There are other large events as well.

I heard the Nisqually quake described as something called a “Benoit”? quake.

Even though this is a well known subduction zone, it wasn’t really a slip or thrust type event.

As the plate subducts, you get these massive blocks, or I guess you could call them plates, of rock being pushed downward where it’s hotter and denser.

Ultimately, the rock will melt and/or become more plastic.

But while it is still in large block form it can break apart and fracture.

And if a piece of rock thats 10,000 square miles in area 80 miles down breaks, it can make for a bad hair day!
