The death toll from the massive explosion at a sprawling coal mine in West Virginia rose to 25 early Tuesday, making it the deadliest U.S. mining disaster in 25 years. Crews halted their efforts to reach four miners still unaccounted for at the Upper Big Branch Mine following the blast Monday afternoon.
Concentrations of methane and carbon monoxide inside the mine made it a safety risk for crews to proceed, said Kevin Stricklin of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration at a 2 a.m. briefing to reporters. Officials planned to drill bore holes from the surface 1,200 feet into the mines to help ventilate it and to collect samples. However, they will first have to use bulldozers to clear a path to reach the part of the mine where they can drill.

I also want to take this time to alert patriots that any funerals or memorial services for these miners may be protested by the vermin of Westboro.
Their website has listed a West Virginia itinerary in recent days. They use signs in WV that say something like “Thank God for dead miners.”
The Westboro Gang likes to go to conservative areas of the country to do their thing. You would think if “God Hates Fags” is their priority, they would be in San Francisco, West LA or South Miami.
But no they target conservatives areas to add “Thank God for dead soliders” or “Thank God for dead miners.” These scum have a hidden agenda.
But whatever, be alerted in advance to their very likely presence at funerals to come...
This is so sad...
There has to be a special place in Hell for the Westboro Church gang.
I am so sick of them calling their group a church.
They don’t go to San Francisco, West LA or South Miami because they are basically cowards.
Knowing something about the region and the coal mining folk there (coming from a SWVA coal mining family myself), I think I can safely predict that if Phelps and merry Westboro crew travel there and start up their bulls**t protests at the funerals, they won't be going home alive.
How very sad. Such dangerous and difficult work too and their families all know it and live in fear everyday I’m sure, and then to have those fears realized.
RIP
My Grandfathers were both WV coal miners. When I visit family in West Virginia I’m always reminded how strong a faith in God is down there.
This morning on an interview with WV Governor Manchin, he was asked if grief counselors would be brought in. The Gov. said we don’t have grief counselors in West Virginia, we have clergy.
That statement speaks volumes. I pray for these miners, their families, and everyone helping.
My parents are from WV, where this happened people just don’t sit back and watch things like the Westboro group antagonize good mining families without expressing their displeasure.
There are enough pick-axe handles and strong arms to swing them around this area to give even the WVSP reason to pause if they get worked up.
I bet the Westboro protesters don’t go. They are cowards and morons but I bet they know better than to show up and protest these funerals. Although a part of me would like to see them try and get taken down, literally, I wouldn’t want any of the families to get in trouble for it.
have there been anyone blaming this on Obama yet because they blamed Bush for the last one.
I am a West Virginia native. If these people from Westboro show up and attempt to disrupt the funerals there might be fewer of them going home.
Terrible news. I expect Sean Penn and other celebs to offer help. NOT!
I would suggest putting some focus on these bastards, which ran the mine:

They have been guilty of everything from massive mine safety violations, to knowingly polluting drinking water. It’s a great example of a company that cares far more about profit than it does employee safety. Let’s give a good bashing where bashing is sorely due.
bttt
What a miserable existence.
For once, I wish there was a media blackout on those evil, evil people.
