Hello everyone! It's time again for my quarterly "What Are You reading Now?" thread.
I consider Freepers to be some of the more well-read people on the Internet and I'm always curious as to what you're all reading.
In short, it can be anything - a classic novel, a NY Times best seller, a trashy pulp novel, a technical journal...in short, anything.
Please do not defile this thread by posting something inane like "I'm reading this thread". It became really unfunny a long time ago.
I'll start. I'm about 65 pages into "War Like The Thunderbolt: The Battle and Burning of Atlanta" by Russell S Bonds. So far, so good. I can't complain.
Well, what are you reading now?
After reading through comments on a recent thread regarding the Civil War, I decided that my public school education left me embarrassingly uninformed on the matter and now its my summer project to educate myself.
If anyone else has any more recommendations on Civil War reading, I would appreciate hearing them.
Hello and thanks for asking! I’m reading “Mayflower” by Nathaniel Philbrick who also wrote “In The Heart of the Sea” which made my stomach ache because he describes some atrocious cannibalism that occured back in the day. He does great historical research and brings the early Americans alive. IMO. Thanks for the thread.
Ronald Reagan wrote to HBW's family to tell them that one of HBW's books, "That Printer of Udell's," which Reagan read at the age of 9, had a profound influence on his life. I wouldn't be surprised if Clint Eastwood's "preacher" from one of my favorite flicks of all time, "Pale Rider," was at least partly inspired by HBW.
I am enjoying the book immensely.
I *love* Tim Powers! Have you read “Last Call” or “Expiration Date”? Excellent work.
I don’t have any books going at the moment (unusual for me) but Amazon just emailed me that my copy of “Changes” (Harry Dresden series) and “Save the Cat” (a screenwriting book) are on their way. I imagine I’ll devour the Harry Dresden book in 24 - 48 hrs, and then work on the other.
NEWS/ACTIVISM ??
John Ringo is a freeper.
H.P. Lovecraft - Complete Works
If you want to find out what will happen next week, read what I’m reading....The Holy Bible.

An IIT is an Appleseed instructor in training (or “orange hat”). When a person completes the training program they become an instructor (”red hat”).
Still on Atlas Shrugged. Up to page 453
“Will” — G. Gordon Liddy
Daring Young Men by Richard Reeves...an account of the Berlin Airlift...lots of anecdotes and data about the operation...a little repetitive but certainly worth reading so we don't forget this first battle of the Cold war.
Lilith by George MacDonald
Two books I could not force myself to finish. Goodness knows I tried. (Dune and Atlas Shrugged)
I really liked “Heat” but got tired of it towards the end. Also how did this man fund all this free labor? Trust fund baby?
I wonder how you liked “Last of the Mohicans,” I had such high hopes. I sort of liked it, and thought I needed to read all the Leatherstocking tales - so I did, and it ended up being a Big Nothing. Sort of the 1800s meandering almost Dickensian no real conclusion thing.
Just a note to agree with you, Clarence Thomas’ book is well worth reading and will be an important historical reference in the future in my opinion.
“I *love* Tim Powers! Have you read Last Call or Expiration Date? Excellent work.”
No, this is my first Tim Powers. But he is on my list and I do plan to read more. He is a smart writer.
