RNC chief of staff Ken McKay resigns

Republican National Committee chief of staff Ken McKay has resigned in the wake of a controversy over an expenditure at a risque California nightclub, RNC communications director Doug Heye said Monday.

McKay's resignation comes one week after the Daily Caller Web site reported that the RNC's January expenditure report included nearly $2,000 spent at Voyeur in West Hollywood, a topless nightclub.

RNC officials worked to distance Chairman Michael Steele from the controversy -- insisting that not only was he not in attendance but that he had no knowledge of the reimbursement -- and promised changes in the way that people were reimbursed by the committee.

McKay's resignation appears to be the leading edge of those moves, and an attempt by Steele and the broader RNC to show donors worried about the stability of the committee that changes ares being made. McKay will be replaced by Mike Leavitt, a longtime party operative who had been serving as deputy chief of staff at the committee. Politico first reported the news of McKay's departure.

“Can’t Karl Rove just step in and run the RNC until after the elections in November? What would that take? “

Good grief, isn’t Steel bad enough? Rove already has a job representing Mexico.

As far as he’s concerned, he already is. They’re going to have to do an intervention with him.

Or perhaps just a good, old-fashioned pink slip.

I frequently make a photocopy of my check and donation stub to a Conservative candidate and send it back to the RNC in their post paid envelope with a note; Here’s a copy of the check YOU AIN’T Getting until you stop throwing Constitutional Conservatives under your damn liberal / progressive / “moderate” bus!

Wow... perfect! ;-)

Possibly illegal, and CERTAINLY unethical for them to send a FUNDRAISING LETTER disguised as an “account statement” — ESPECIALLY marked “PAST DUE”. That alone would get them a phone call from me ripping the Fundraising Director a new one...

You know, the more I think about it the more it bothers me that they sent you a “demand letter” like that... I was a Fundraising Director for a State Party years back. There is no way I would even THINK of sending out something like that!!! That borders on fraud I would think, but I’m having trouble thinking of where the statutes would be... I know a lot of people who don’t really look at what they’re paying, see a past due notice, and cut a check without thinking twice (mostly older people horrified they may have forgotten to pay something they promised to pay).

I’d hate to be a part of bringing down the RNC (in some ways), but if they’re being that dishonest and unethical well perhaps we just need to clear house and “start over”. It’s clear they have no clue not only HOW to raise money in these times, but now they are resorting to lies to even get the little money they do get in — it’s obvious they know NOTHING, or CARE nothing about WHY the donations are dwindling and have no idea how to get those rolling back in...

Just to state for the record - since my two posts don’t touch on the main post...

STEELE NEEDS TO GO! How many people is he going to destroy to protect himself? And, what the heck is wrong with these people falling on their swords to protect HIM? Isn’t there anyone at the RNC with half a brain??? (Yeah, I know... Stupid question...)

The clueless obviously don’t understand fundraising. I think I’ll eschew reading the comments. I’m sure they’re full of “Fire Steele” instead of complaining of the war on the RNC by the media. We eat our own.

Like Obama, he probably won’t. My guess is he feels a sense of entitlement to chartered jet flights, etc. Just another public ‘servant’ laying sideways in the public trough lapping it up.

Steele, “I know nothing. Who you gonna believe me or your own lyin’ eyes? Go ahead; make my day; fire me and I scream ‘racial bias.’”

I basically agree. But a state should have at least 1 rep and then go by how many GOPers each state elected. Problem solved.

There is a way to get the attention of the RNC. All those letters that they send out for funding, write a note: that as long as Steel is the chair of the RNC there will be no funds sent from your house. You might even add who you would like to see in that job. Using their envelope will cost them but cost you nothing but a little time. Maybe they will take the hint if they receive thousands of these!

RNC send me a “important survey” recently. I put in with my junk mail to be incinerated pile but might just write FIRE STEELE in black sharpie and send it back.

Even when and if Steele does the right thing and steps aside, do you think the people who put him there are going to ask US about who we’d like to take his place?

As I recall Steele is the RNC Chair—arguably one of the smarter people in the world—but he sees, hears, speaks and knows nothing. That’s about right for the RNC which does not have to see, speak, see or know anything because the demrats provide its marching orders.

A little Googling shows this place isn’t a stripper or booby bar, but is some kind of Hollyweird thing.

Doesn't matter anymore - perception is reality in politics, and the perception now is that Steele is clueless with money. Steele used up his goodwill by being a spokesman instead of a chairman, so now this 'nothing' story has weight.

FWIW, the impression I get is that this should be a minor expense account kerfuffle, handled internally without anyone getting fired. But, the affair was mishandled and perhaps more importantly Steele felt he needed to throw a scapegoat out to try to save his own job.

I really don't give a crap about the RNC spending some expense dollars at some bodice ripping Hollywood "club" to wine and dine rich people who might donate, if that's what this guy was up to. But I do care that in one of the best if not the best years for Republicans since Roosevelt we have an inept fool in charge of the RNC.
